Interesting find on road side
I am an avid cyclist (pedal bikes) and pedal about 5,000klm's a year.
Anyway over the past 10 years of riding I have found 3 of these on the side of the roads. It really makes one wonder what kind of story is behind this kind of "missing" but somewhat valued hareware.

I shudder to think about it.
Perhaps the owners just had more of these than they needed.....let's hope. Or they replaced them with locking ones.......paula

I would say that three people possible had a very bad day. Might find some other valuable trailer parts in the general area of where you found the pins.

Yeah, despite having a trailer for a grand total of 6 months now, I actually have two - a standard one like that for short trips, plus a locking one for longer trips where stops in rest areas and the like are going to happen.

I found one of those out walking one day but it looked like it had never been used. Don't know if lost or thrown away. What I used to find a lot of - and still see at times on the highway - are the rubber straps used to hold the propane tank covers on a lot of SOB's. Have also seen a few of the covers beside the road.

I'd bet they lay them on their bumper (as I do) while hoisting their shank and ball head into the garage. Then they promptly forget it is on the bumper and when they drive around they eventually fall off.

We've actually lost a few of these, but not in the way you'd think. We always keep an extra one with us, on the hitch with just a pin (we use a locking one full time). Sometimes, we use the pin from it if we lose one of the pins for the WD clamps, or from somewhere else -- we drive around for a bit and forget about it, only to come back and see it not there anymore

That is why the trailers come with chains.

Several years ago when I was coming back to the boat launch, there was a sheriff investigating, some kids had gone through the parking lot and took all the clips off and some pins out just for laughs. I'm glad I had the locking type.

When I used to pull a popup. Stoped to eat lunch. When we came out I saw a couple of big kids walking away from the area I was parked in. I checked and the clip on the hitch pin was gone. Not sure if they did it or I just got lucky and checked before the pin came out.

I embarassed to report that I have lost more than one this way.
So, may I have them back, Road Ruler?

This is another benefit of using a locking pin. I leave my keys in the cylinder while I put the head away. I'm not driving very far without retreiving my locking pin and KEYS from the bumper!
Old folks "trick myself "routines have been starting to be developed by me for the last couple years.

those pins are used for other things such as snow plows.
btw..... a member here reported that those 45 degree pins seem to be connected to wallowing out of the hole in the receiver.

If you look closely at the image you can see marks along the bottom of the shaft. Looks like it slowly worked it's way out but stopped in certain positions long enough to make the marks.
