Indiana Toll Road is a Disgrace

Returned Monday from an 8,200 mile, 3 1/2 week trip....NC to OR/CA and points in between. While we encountered some rough roads, I would advise against pulling a trailer on the Indiana Toll Road. My trailer and TV are set-up to spec, but no matter what speed or what lane I was in, I felt a new sympathy for bull-riders. There were many instances of roads with issues, but even my birth state of Minnesota ("two seasons; winter and road repair") was a LOT better than Hoosierland. Out of the 22 states I traversed, Indiana gets my award for nastiest pavement. I should have taken pictures of the interior of my trailer. Doors and cabinets (including fridge and freezer) that had NEVER popped open before...all had purged their contents. Beware!

I couldn't agree more and don't get me started on their restrooms! It was privatized and apparently without enforceable covenants for maintenance.

Ditto, I was up there a few weeks ago. I spent over $40 for the privilege of driving on some the worst so called highways I have ever been on.

The previous resident of the Indiana governors mansion sold off much of the taxpayers property to make a quick buck and screw the taxpayers of the state of Indiana. The new owners of the toll road raised the tolls and are not investing any money back into the property. Having been a previous long time resident of Indiana, I can attest to how seriously bad the roads are. Instead of repairing the roads for the long term, they use chip seal to hide the holes and then you have the privilege of cleaning off the tar your vehicles. Recommendation, avoid Indiana roads.

The quick bucks from the sale of the toll roads were not spent on infra structure but some political cronies got great part time jobs........

As an Indiana resident, I could not believe this sale.

When the lease is up, the roads will not be fit for a covered wagon at 2.5mph with oxen pulling it.

Indiana Toll Road

That road has sucked for years, and as a result we had looked for alternative routes. We had used 24 for a couple of trips, but the bridges of Indiana must not be in much better condition, as bridge construction has caused detours. Indiana's detour routes can best be described as "cow paths" unbelievably rough roads. We absolutely hate traveling across Indiana and we used to complain about Illinois' roads, but Indiana takes the prize.

Indiana is battling very hard for the prestigious title "Worst road in the USA!"

I made it a vow many years ago to avoid Ohio, Indiana and Illinois at all costs. Haven't been back since 1996 and don't plan to return.

The Indiana Toll Road is worthy of third-world status. When a toll road makes the Ohio Turnpike look good, you know it's an abomination. Traveling both on the way to/from Gillette this year, we found that many county roads in northern OH are in much better shape than either toll road.

The roads in Indiana made the roads in Ohio look and feel first class. If possible I never plan on driving thru Indiana again.

Yes, we agree Indiana is bad, bad, bad. Wisconsin interstate is also very bad, even though we aren't paying toll. It's got that "3 ft level" feel to it, if you know what I mean. Bounce, bounce bounce. We went Canada to New York to visit our oldest son a couple weeks ago so we could avoid Chicago, toll roads, and congestion. Only 30 miles further to drive overall, and MUCH better scenery. Thank you, Canada!

Indiana

Best part about the sale of the Indiana toll road is that it was sold to foreign companies, so the money people pay to drive on that death trap goes right out of the this country and users get crap roads and the Indiana legislators can claim that they are not responsible for that road. Another way the corrupt politicians in Indiana to hoodwink it's citizens. AVOID Indiana roads at all cost. Their State parks are not much to talk about since they are falling into disrepair due to extreme budget cuts. The taxpayers pay to support the parks via taxes, but also have to pay to enter the parks.

As a current Hoosier, who is no fan of the toll road, either pre lease or post lease, I recommend you take US 20 instead of I 80/ I90. More time consuming, but free, with plenty of clean(er) restrooms in gas stations, stores, and small town restaurants. It is in far better repair so you won't pop a rivet....
