I second Gary's suggestion. Rt. 36 is a very nice easy driving road. And just for the novelty of it you can take a short detour outside of Lebanon, KS to the geographical center of the Continental US. A good photo opportunity but nothing more so go for it. I've driven 36 the full width of KS and MO.

Roger I drove 36 from Jackson Center all the way to Denver last fall. It was a great trip. One section of 36 was a divided highway but most was two lane in great shape much more interesting than I70.

We stayed at Milford lake COE two weeks ago. We had a spot on the lake near the entrance reserved, but the weather was cool and the non electric/no water section was empty so we switched down there and had the entire section to ourselves. Lake views and all. Beautiful. Would recommend. Then we went to Cedar Bluff state park south of Hays and Ellis KS. It was nice... Nothing spectacular... But nice. Hotter than hell, but the AC kept us comfortable. It's prob 30 min from I70 to Cedar Bluff and your GPS will take you past the real entrance to the south section... Don't be fooled... Check their directions or call ahead if you go there.
