Impromtu VT/NY trip

For our first trip of the year we have decided to take a short, impromptu trip to VT then over to NY and back home to RI. We do plan on stopping at the Shelburne Museum in Vt and in Corning, NY. Any recommendations for campgrounds? We hope to stay in state parks but would be up for any well recommended place. Any other suggestions as to what we should not miss?

We stayed at a KOA in Watkins Glen - good campground with close proximity to great hiking, sight seeing, wine tours around the finger lakes and a trip to our favorite vegetarian restaurant: Moosewood in Ithaca.

In VT - Queeche Gorge is a must and north of that in Plymouth is the Calvin Coolidge museum which is just fantastic!

Whatever you do, have a blast!!

On edit - forgot to mention the Simon Pearce factory and restaurant in Queeche too.

Is it wrong to quote myself? :-)

Links I should have included:

Moosewood Restaurant - Ithaca, NY

Simon Pearce (factory and restaurant can be searched from here). Queeche, VT

Calvin Coolidge Museum, Plymouth Notch, VT

We might need water and electricity by the time we get to NY so it is great to learn you liked the KOA there. I don't think the state parks have hook ups but I may be wrong. This is a learning trip for us for sure!

I still have the original Moosewood Cookbook! If the restaurant is still there after all these years I will make a big effort to get to it!

We have plans to go to the Shelburne Museum in Vt and I will have to take a look and see if that is close to Queeche Gorge. It sounds great!

Thanks for the info!

Looks like you're going to many of the same places I've been this year.

I was at Watkins Glen Memorial Day weekend. Had a great time between the lake, the gorge trail, local waterfalls, and the wineries. Look to do the gorge trail on a weekday if possible. There is one loop with electric hookups.

Was just in Quechee last weekend. Beautiful area, but the weather didn't cooperate with the balloons and my daughter isn't too happy to have missed them after saving her money for three years for a tethered balloon ride. It was pretty interesting watching the glass being made at Simon Pierce. We stayed at Silver Lake state park this time on site 35. It was a nice one with a view of the pond and a babbling brook next to the fire pit, just tight on some turns and steep coming into the site. We'd previously stayed at Storrs Pond recreation area in Hanover, NH. There were nice sites on the water there, with water and electric, for a reasonable cost. Both are a bit of a ride from Shelburne though. Smugglers Notch state park was a nice area in the right part of the state though.

Enjoy the trip!
