If you're headed to Salem....
Just got back from a trip to Salem, Oregon, for a family situation and I have a suggestion for "don't miss" side trips during the Rally.
Oregon Garden is located in Silverton, Oregon, just 15 miles east of Salem. If you are into flowers, vegetables, water gardens, trees or anything else green, this is the place to be.
Silverton Road is the east boundary of the Fairgrounds. Just head east out of Salem and when you get to Silverton, turn right at the first stop light, and then right again at the top of the hill. The Garden is on the left about a block and a half down the hill. The hours are 10 a.m to 6 p.m. daily. Cost is $10.00 adults and $8.00 seniors (I think kids are $5.00). The cost includes a tram that takes you on a narrated tour of the entire Garden and makes various stops. You can get on and off the tram all day long.You can take a picnic lunch and eat on the grounds or they have a little restaurant there. Dogs are welcome on a leash no longer than 8 feet. Kids will enjoy the special kids garden where all the plants have unusual or fun names.
There is a Frank Lloyd Wright house also on the grounds, but there is an additional $5.00 charge for the tour.
If you haven't worn out after the Gardens, be sure to visit Silver Falls, just a few miles to the northwest. You'll need good walking shoes to get to it. It's one of many beautiful waterfalls in the state.
As for good places to eat, don't miss McGrath's Fish House right behind Lancaster Mall (the main shopping center on Lancaster). If you go east on Silverton Road turn right on Lancaster. The Mall is about 10 blocks down on the right. For a wonderful lunch (only Monday through Friday), try the Rolling Bagel. It's a little hard to find but worth it. Great soups, salads and fresh bagels and sandwiches. It's in the back part of "1800 Mall" on the east side of Lancaster.
And don't forget the Tillamook Cheese and Ice Cream Factory in Tillamook, about an hour and half out of Salem toward the coast. Tours throughout the day (morning better) Monday through Friday. Absolutely gorgeous drive, but don't try to take the trailer on highway 22 from Valley Junction to Hebo. It's alot more curvey than it shows on the map. And since you've gone as far as Tillamook, save some room in your tummy and drive to Garibaldi for a great lunch or dinner at "Pirate's Cove" restaurant, overlooking the bay. Fantastic fresh fish. (Tip: the servings are BIG, one order of fries will really serve four people).
Just thought I would pass this information on to all of you who will going to International. I will still be in restoration phase but thinking about all the silver sitting in Salem.
