Ideas from East Coast to West, and Back again
Feeling a bit crazy to think about it, but my contract ends in mid-May next year. I am married with 2 boys that will be 7 and 12 at that time. I'm thinking of making the trip from Richmond, Va to Rushmore, Wyoming, see the Redwoods, down to Grand Canyon, and back again.
I may take a month to do it. I've never been further West than Kansas myself.
First, I would like suggestions on stops for a trip like that, and 2nd, do you have any ideas of any companies that might want to sponsor the trip - say from a blogging perspective, or some other way to offset my gas and some of the fun stuff. I don't mind paying my own way, but I might work harder at documenting the trip if I had some expectation to do so.
Am I nuts?
This will be in a 64 Overlander which I've done everything to - Water, electrical, black and gray tanks, AC. It will still look completely original though, down to the 9" tile floor.
I wish I had one of those great anti-sway hitches, but I don't have the money for that. Will be probably using a 2005 Ford Expediction at the TV.

Rob,
Enjoy the trip...
You will have family along and lifetime memories. I sure wish our folks would have wanted to spend time with us... Good on you!
I suggest you ask the kids where they want and arrange with flexibility.
Your only "goal" should be to have fun and return safe and sound. IMHO.
Let us know how planning goes!! Once you have a "basic" course/route, folks with knowledge of those areas will
Pipe up.
Peace
Channing.

Thanks. I got an update from work that says I'm employed up to the middle of May. I am not installing tank heaters on my trailer, but wonder how the weather is in may for the northern states. I may need to start my trip going across the lower states, then hit the upper ones on the way back in June.
I'm focussing now on getting the trailer in fully restored status, so just wanted to solicit hot spots for anyone that has made a similar trip. I want lots of sights, but not commercial things like Disneyland (plus that would kill the budget)

My one suggestion… Get your kicks, on Route 66. There are only fragments of Route 66 left, but there are plenty of stops along what's left that are worth making. Since Rte 66 passes relatively close to the Grand Canyon, that ties into your itinerary.
The Mother Road: Historic Route 66

Also, you may want to look at the Road Trip USA web page for other classic cross-country routes:

Take the northern route one way and the southern route the other. Do not go through Denver either direction.
