Ideal Campground--What's Yours?

I'm interested in what this community sees as the ideal campground. Do you prefer quiet and dark? Boisterous and amenities galore? Do you like having using a chain operator so you know what you'll get or do you like finding the small and unique spot? Is there something that's lacking out there? Are there parts of the country that are well served or under served? Any and all thoughts welcome! What about cost--would you pay more for certain features? Are CG's already too expensive for what they offer?

Thanks and happy trails!

Kim

campsite

For the most part I like State and National campgrounds. I am looking for quiet sites. I prefer an awesome view such as mountains , lake, river or ocean. OR to be secluded in woods. Either way a little buffer between sites. I am not looking for activities provided by campground. Ranger programs, however are welcomed. I have a full bath, so with full hookups
Im good to go, if there is not sewer at the site, clean restrooms are a must. Finally my soap box, fire ring at the site. I cook on the open fire the most, and it is for me- the essence of camping- sitting around the campfire!

Perfect campgrounds are few-and-far between. We try to get as many items on the following list as possible. Kinda in order of desirability:

Reasonable campsite access (no low-trees/scratching brush/enormous pot holes)
Less than 5 miles to blacktop road
First-come first-serve
14 day stay allowed
Drinking water/vault toilet/dump station all within 20 miles
Solar capable tree canopy
AT&T or Verizon cellphone service
Large and secluded campsite
Waterfront (lake/stream), hardwood forest, mountain view
Hiking trails and scenic roadways
No dripping pine trees overhead
No obnoxious neighbors
Non-electric sites at $20 or less per night
Food/supplies within 20 miles
Reasonable level of biting insects
High elevation in summer
Sunny and 75 degrees

I warned you "perfect" is hard to come by . . . I'll give one example of our perfect campground: Ten-X Campground at the Grand Canyon.

Robert that’s how we feel. City park, National park, KOA, or our own back yard. All are great places to be in our Airstream.

This one’ll do for this weekend [emoji3]

We love water sites. For our 2 week vacation to celebrate our 35th this year, we spent week 1 on Association Island (a sunset spot on an island right on Lake Ontario) and week 2 on the Atlantic coast in Maine.

This one is a marina on a river with a few campsites on the banks that let you watch the boats laze on by....

Lotta lights at night if that’s your thing (we kinda dig it).

We’ve also stayed at a state park in MA that has ZERO lights and after dusk, it’s PITCH BLACK despite the fact you’re a 5 minute drive to a ferry in to Boston. Man - when the stars are out you see them in spades!

We love any site [emoji3]

At about 8000' in the Sierra's with good shade and a creek running within 20' of camp. NO generators Anywhere to be heard. Friendly neighbors. Beer on ice, wine at the ready

I miss the tractor pulls of eastern Kansas. They are great and the crowds enjoy the dirt, dust and noise immensely.

I miss the idling of a Stihl Chainsaw and the revved up two cycle engine when needing a cord of wood for the upcoming Winter. Just keep that chain lubed and you are ready to get to it. Wear ear protection that was used at the Tractor Pull.

I miss the laying on my back in a sleeping bag, watching the stars at night, before I could afford a tent... or even owning an Airstream?... you have to be kidding me.

Wrong Turn or Closed Road... music to my sense of camping in isolation.

I miss being parked over night at a truck stop in western Kansas, with refrigeration units on the 18 wheelers giving me goosebumps, thinking that inside that trailer it is close to 28F and the interior of my Airstream is... well, hot.

I will miss having the company of like minded Airstream owners who understand some of us enjoy just being able to share 5 acres, per trailer, and watch the Sunrise and Sunset in peace and quiet. This would be a crowded campsite in Wyoming.

Most of all... getting through the 2nd outing and being able to recall that was so long ago you have lost count of the outings, but have the photographs to prove... YOU DID IT.

Good for you. Make every trip your BEST.

I prefer:
1). At least a gravel spot to park on to keep the mud down. Recently stayed at a site that was all sand. Had it rained it would have been a mess.
2). Sites that are spaced well. I don’t like campgrounds that are like parking lots where you feel on top of each other. We stayed at a KOA and private campground that was very nicely spaced and laid out.
3). Nicely treed, but not heavy woods. Heavy woods cause lots of bugs. But like some shade so one can sit outside and not fry in the sun.
4). I like full hook ups because I like to stay planted for a week at a time, and I don’t want to move the trailer to dump in the middle of a stay. If it’s just a few nights at least decent electricity and water is fine.
5). Not by a noisy highway. That kills the mood.
6). A nice campfire ring and grassy area around it.
7). Close to some amenities like hiking and biking trails. My wife and I like to bike during the day for fresh air and exercise.

One of the reasons we do most of our camping in Spring and Fall is less traffic and campers. We like the privacy. My home is in the country and I can walk out my backyard naked (not that I have) and no one will see me.

As per cost: not more than $45 per night for full hookups. That probably is not realistic during holidays, but we never go then. We stayed at a really nice campground in Michigan with a view of the Lake: $35 per night. THAT’S a bargain.
