I25 Lawn Ornaments or camper graveyard
A few weeks ago we drove south from Fort Collins, CO to Hatch, NM on I 25. I couldn't believe how many houses along the way had 1, 2 or more travel trailers parked in the yard (along with an equal number of rusted horse trailers)! Most of them, SOB's, appeared to be past their useful lives as campers. We only spotted four or five Airstreams and only a couple of them appeared to be road ready.
Anyone else ever notice this? Are there other areas like that along the highways and byways?

Lew,
I'm bumping this up as I'm interested to hear from others about this too.
As far as ourselves, every time we drive anywhere, we are constantly looking along the sides of the road, trying to see behind garages and barns, out in fields, etc. to see if we can spot a "silver bullet" hiding somewhere.

If I was looking for some rare old trailer this is definitely one of the places I'd look. Have spent quite a bit of time at Leasburg Dam State Park in Radium Springs, NM the past couple of years and have traveled the I25 Corridor from T & C down to Las Cruces many times and the number of old trailers is amazing. Get off I25 and travel the NM highway that runs parallel and you'll see even more. But the entire state of NM seems to be a old trailer paradise. Another place you'll see a bunch is in the area East of NM 11 going South from Deming to Columbus. Not as many here as along I25 but still a bunch.

When we went to Picacho Peak for New Years I saw a 13 panel just south of the gas station in Lemitar. Tamara was driving. I got excited but Tamara said I had enough projects.

I lived in Colorado for several years and was always amazed at the number of vintage vehicles of all sorts that survive in good condition due to the dry climate!

I won't be surprised if you were seeing housing for ranch and farm workers. Some of it may be mobile to house ranch workers near the herds or flocks at certain times of the year.
The horse trailers are probably used for storage or transporting rust colored horses.

As we approached Fort Collins from the east on Highway 14, we began to notice how many houses had more than one or two older travel trailers parked on their lot. Most appeared to be uninhabitalbe, but I'm sure some may be used for housing for helpers.
The majority of those along the I25 corridor were near towns or cities where you wouldn't expect them to be used for housing of any kind.
Of course we were looking for Airstreams and I did spot one on the west side of I25 between the exits for Socorro. It was sitting behind the house among a bunch of weeds and looked as though it hadn't been moved in some time. (I observed all that while driving 70mph and listening to my nagivator tell me to watch where I was going...).
We drove a little over 4000 miles and saw a lot of fifth wheel and travel trailers, but only 2 Airstreams on the road. One was eastbound on I80 in Nebraska on Jan. 4, the other westbound on I10 in AZ on Jan. 20th.

Hi from Ga. . . I've seen this 'trailer in every yard' deal thru-out the west. On I-10 in New Mexico and West Texas, it's more common than not. Of course that seems to apply to cars and trucks too. I know, I know it's a DRY heat and nothing ever rusts away. Most classic car folks are scouring those areas regularly. Regards, Craig

I see many older trailers and motorhomes around central Fla when down there, but the salty damp air takes its toll on them
