I-80 closed in Iowa

Just in case anyone is traveling on I -80 in Iowa , it is closed near Tipton at the Cedar River due to flooding. The detour around it is quite long, Des Moines take I-35 north to US 20 then US 61 south back to I-80 .

If you've been in the midwest you know what a pounding we have taken from rain and severe weather. If it's a river its flooded right now.

But the good news, the people of the Midwest are not looting , tearing up the evacuation centers, screaming for FEMA trailers, or demanding shopping cards to use at the Gucci store. They will help themselves and each other.

Good point, and a refreshing change. Keep it up.

Good luck with getting through this...we see the news reports and wonder if we'd have the strength to endure. I guess when there's no choice in the matter, we'd just do it...you find the strength from somewhere. We're thinking of you!

I have never STARTED a thread and don't know how. Help in that area will be appreciated. The Wabash river in southern Illinois is cresting at 26 feet above flood stage. Levies are holding as far as I have heard. Three of the nicest "camp" airstreams I have ever seen are in the area that will flood and since I am travelling there in July, I would like to hear from locals. Mt Carmel Illinois and southern Indiana. Thanks, Jim

63air,
I haven't got my map out, but is where you are talking about anywhere near where I-80 intersects with I-29? May not be an issue anyway by next weekend, but we are heading up I-29 to Sioux City on our way to Montana next Saturday. We've got lots of water here in Springfield also. Pumped 8" out of my basement yesterday, and still periodically pumping today. I think the drought's broken.

The problem is on the portion of I-80 between Iowa City and Davenport.

In the news we see the heart-breaking shots of families in motorboats going down main streets; it must be just terrifying for you all there. This is certainly one of those "once in a hundred years" events.

Our best wishes to the folks involved in this disaster and wishes for a speedy and safe end to it all.

Thanks, I appreciate it. Looks like I may miss the worst part of it.
