Having just traveled the same route to Kansas City just two weeks ago, I fully concur. I've been on some better maintained roads in parts of the Yukon Territory.

You may have noticed that neither the states or feds are spending enough money on infrastructure. Bad roads are one result and this will get worse, I fear.

Last time, a couple of years ago, Indiana was ok on I-70, but western Ill. was bad on the way to the Miss. R. crossing just north of St. Louis. We prefer 2 laners, but when you have to go cross country fast to get to destinations, interstates and some other limited access roads are necessary.

The worst road for a distance was the W. Va. Turnpike—and you have to pay for it too.

70 through Indiana really is the worst, most potholed, bumpy road we've been on in the whole country. Stay off it!

We were on that highway 3 years ago and it was fine. It shows how fast an interstate can deteriorate without proper maintenance.

Can you tell us where you began your trip across Illinois through Indiana? We are planning to travel to St. Louis from Jackson Center in October. May need to change our plans accordingly!

I-70 from Indianapolis to Terre Haute is under construction currently, they are patching many of the worse areas. So it's getting better. We took I-70 in May and it was very bad in several areas.

We traveled Rt. 80 eastbound through Ill, Ind, Ohio and Pa just last week. In general not too bad. There are construction repairs through western Pa but they caused no delays eastbound. A lot of the work looked to be bridgework.

I did notice some construction signs along the way but didnt see anything being done lol. Imagine that.

And to sigman: I started at Casey, IL (mile marker 129) and went clear to Springfield, OH (mile marker 54, just east of Dayton). About 4 hours worth on 70 alone lol. On the way home, we brought I-75 south then west on 70. So about 3 1/2 hours worth lol. And honestly, the ENTIRE interstate through 70 was bad. Some spotty goodness but it never lasted

Beside the bad road conditions, some years ago a wise man told me

"With the completion of the Interstate Highway System it is now possible to drive coast to coast and not see a thing".

He makes a good point.
