Thanks! With all of this input, I think we should find something to give us a break while on the long drive!

Well, we made our drive across Kansas last week. I had it all mapped out and my route included a stop at the largest ball of twine. (Sorry...I just had to see it!) Unfortunately, we woke up the morning of our drive to icy road conditions. It turned out to be a somewhat scary drive and included us sliding along the interstate at one point. Thankfully, my husband was driving and he handled the truck beautifully (although I think we both stopped breathing for a moment and our hearts beat rapidly!). With the icy roads, we ended up not making any of our stops. We did take Rt. 24 for awhile in an attempt to avoid large trucks that made our sway worse but when we saw a pitiful quail sliding across the road in front of us, we knew the road was even more icy. So, we got back on I-70 and SLOWLY made our way to Lawrence for a night at Clinton State Park. It was a long day.

So...thanks everyone for the great suggestions. Maybe next time....

[Pictures of cold, frozen Kansas and tales of our drive are now up on my blog.]

The "Cathedral of the Plains" St. Fidelis Catholic Church is worth seeing off I-70, Catholic or not, religious or not. It's an amazing testament to the German settlers and their culture, and an outstanding example of architecture. It is one of the "8 Wonders of Kansas" for good reason.

Lawrence, KS is a great little college town. Lots of coffee shops, theaters, historic houses and walking tours. Several bike shops to rent a bike and bike around the flat lands of Kansas. If you make it to the Eastern side of Kansas on I 70, Kansas City, Mo be sure to go to Stroud's Oak Ridge Manor for great chicken and great ambiance. Also the Campus RV park in Independence, Mo is very close to all the sights in Independence.
