Hwy 1

We are currently visiting friends in San Francisco and will be heading down the coast to various campsites and wanted to get any recommendations about driving or not driving along Highway 1. We are on week 3 of a 6 week trip, pulling our 26', 1965 Airstream Overlander with a 2013 Yukon Denali XL.

Hwy 1 S thru Santa Cruz is a beautiful drive. Hookups available at the SC yacht Basin. SP's near Santa Cruz and Capitola/Soquel (New Brighton Beach) but check Reserve America for reservations and availability. It's a nice drive around the bay to Monterrey and I've heard camping at the fair grounds. Also camping at Moss Landing between Monterrey and SC.

Just heads up I believe Hwy 1 is still closed basically at Big Sur so Monterrey to Salinas to Hwy 101 to the the central coast is the drive around. Lots of camping/RV park options in Paso Robles/Pismo/Morro Bay areas.

happy trails

McleishNOLA assuming S is your True direction, in Paso we often stay at https://www.sunrvresorts.com/resorts.../wine-country/ They have a sister property right on 101 that nice but with freeway noise. This on is a few miles E of 101 on hwy 46. As for Morro Bay, a heads up as the Morro Bay SP on the bay I heard is going thru rehab but there are others in the area (morro strand SP, Morro dunes RV park and Montana de Oro SP just S of M Bay.

Tons of options in the Pismo Beach area.

Further S if you like getting out of the main stream look at http://countyofsb.org/parks/jalama.sbc

it's a county park on the edge of Vandenberg AFB, S of Lompoc. Remote for sure, but a great location and killer jalama burgers at the store/burger shack.

After 101 S of Gaviota comes out to the ocean, the are a few SP's (Refugio) and RV parks El Capitan. Check ahead as they may not have recovered after the severe slides and storm damage of this last Feb/Mar and the year prior

Bob

p.s. if due to the closure at big sur you decide to do hwy 1 N from SF, there are some great threads.
