Hurricane Harvey.... Do We Change Plans?

We are looking for information and advice regarding an upcoming trip starting November 1 from Sacramento to Florida. We had planned to work our way down to Dallas and then to Sulphur LA/ Lake Charles area and spend time before heading on to Florida. Our route was primarily going to be I-10 across from Texas to Florida.
Any information regarding damage to the highways or other infrastructure would be appreciated. I have emailed the campgrounds we had reserved but as yet had no response.

Please if you have any other route suggestions you have that would be very helpful. We have great reservations at beaches around Florida and plan on spending Thanksgiving with family in South Florida.

Thank you for any and all suggestions!
Best,
SS

I would route yourself farther north, as Texas is undoubtedly still going to be in major crisis mode two months from now.

Campgrounds are likely to be full of helpers and refugees from the ravaged areas, and need every available site.

Your best source for infrastructure damage would seem to be public sites for counties and cities.

I could be wrong...

Hi

Just spent the last hour on the phone with Texas. We've pushed our plans for a visit out to next spring.... I'd suggest going just a bit further north if you can.

Yes change your plans to miss the southeast and Florida .

Irma will have done a number on the area.

What are the plans to help our Florida Family during Irma.
I have a spare driveway and room in the culture de sac for someone.

Thank you so much for the offer!!
Trip is now off and family has evacuated to TN.
Very kind of you, hopefully someone might find shelter with you.
Be safe all.

FYI, the Ft.Worth/Dallas area is completely unaffected by Harvey, unless we have ordered an item that comes from Houston. Those are getting here, just a bit late.

300 miles inland makes a huge difference when you're dealing with a hurricane. All we got was showery weather for a couple of days and some welcome relief from the summer heat. That and a very temporary gasoline shortage when the news media were broadcasting scare talk. Lasted about a day. Price went up about 30 cents, and that has stayed with us.

In other words, don't avoid the rest of Texas just because the poor folks on the coast took a lot of damage.

I'm here in Corpus Christi and Rockport. It's the off season here and the RV Parks have been cleared out. I mean you can find a great, freshly swept space in prime location. If you need suggestions I drive by the parks everyday.

No. Its all clear here. Lots of top lots because the wind cleared the junk off the pads and lots of space availability.

Pre-hurricane season, we had thought that this fall we might tour the Gulf Coast area from Corpus Christi to Key West. After the hurricanes hit, we canceled all plans.

Is a roadtrip around the Gulf states still doable, or would it be better to put this itinerary on hold for a year or two until this area recovers?

I think you're fine on gulf coast and into Florida but don't count on camping south of Islamorado in the keys unless you get lucky in Key West. I had reservations at Curry Hammock (near Marathon) in November and December. Both were canceled due to park closures but my reservations in Key Largo remained active.

Our reservations for Key West have been cancelled for December, but we are still on for Jan, Feb, and March in the Tampa area.
