Huntington Lake, CA. Advice

We've never been there. Looks like there are a few RV parks there. Anyone have experience? How's the road? We'd be towing a 25FC.

Probably late June early July.

I've driven up to Huntington in my car before, but I don't think I'd ever be willing to try it pulling the trailer. Shaver Lake has a lovely campground, and is just below Huntington. Maybe a good place to set up camp, and then you can drive up to Huntington for the day.

We've also camped at Courtwright Reseviour that is in that same area that wasn't too hard to get too, and we tow at 30 foot. We had a rally there if you want to check it out, here's the thread. http://www.airforums.com/forums/f288...-a-106681.html

We are actually thinking of trying to get together again there this August.

We took our Chevy Astro van towing a 18 foot Terry travel trailer up there. 2nd gear most of the time and some 1st gear runs at hairpin turns. We made it and back with no issues. You'll be fine, suggest making reservations though.

We have towed our 28' (actually 30') up there on several occasions. The road is good and is a state highway, but there are a couple hairpin curves near the Shaver Lake dam. Perfectly manageable though. Shaver is about 5600' elevation and you will go up to about 8000" elevation past Shaver before dropping down to about 7000' at Huntington. Stay on 168 and don't go through Big Creek.

There are a few National Forest Campgrounds near Lakeshore that are very nice. Our favorite is Deer Creek. Right next to the lake and good sized sites. Catavee and Kinnikinnick have some good sized sites and are on the hillside across the road from Deer Creek. Be aware that some of the sites at these campgrounds share a parking space, but you can reserve both like they are a double site. You just pay twice the price. Rancheria Campground has just been redone and has some larger sites too. The campground is a little tight but the roads are good and we negotiated it with no problem. Reservations can be made through recreation.gov.

There are some private camps with full hookups. but I don't care for these as they are generally packed in tight.

Ohh, there are NO dump stations up there. The nearest one is Camp Edison at Shaver Lake. They charge a whopping $25 fee too.

Yes you would be able to tow your trailer up there. Just make sure you have reservations up there. Beautiful places to see and fishing is great.
