Read some geology if you really want some perspective.

No kidding! I love the "Roadside Geology" series, and John Mcphee's "Annals of a Former Time" is terrific. Was it you who recommended that one? If so, thanks!

Just think, some of those trees were living right there when Christ was walking the earth. Wow!

I'd love to Michelle.
It would be fun to visit and maybe take a flight.
And of course meet Sarah.
I'll keep working on it!

Sequoias are big too!!!

Janet,

Redwoods are tall; sequoias are simply huge. Sure wish I could have put the Airstream near one of these giants at Calaveras Big Trees State Park, but I think their size can be felt from these pics.

Janet,

Something struck me about your 500th post, so I started looking around a little. I don't know how I've missed some of these great threads! "Annals.." is great stuff. One comment I won't forget is how much modern geology owes to road cuts--geologists would never have the money to slice into the earth in so many places. My favorite is the slip fault that is revealed on I-40 on the west side of Kingman.

My goodness that's a LOT of toothpicks, or SOB's (same thing I guess), in those trees. I love the big forests and we really enjoy camping in areas where the only music is that coming from the forest - the trees swaying with the wind, the birds calling each other and singing their hearts out. The picture attached was taken less than 90 minutes from my home. Although this is second growth and not anywhere near the majesty of the trees in the beautiful pictures already on the thread, it is still a tremendous feeling, and healing, to be out with the trees. Do Ents exist?

Humbled to say the least!

Nice photo Janet! Here's one one of the General Sherman Tree in the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias in Yosemite.

Crispy, The giant sequoias (largest living thing) are found in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in eastern California. Got to Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Park or Yosemite National Park for the big ones.

The Coast Redwoods (tallest living thing) are found in the Coast Ranges from Big Sur to Oregon. The biggest ones are in Redwood National Park up near Eureka. I think that may be where JanetB's picture was taken.
