Houston to Yellowstone

Hello all. Live in the Houston area and would like to a trip to Yellowstone. In the very early planning stages and it may not even be this year. If so, will be towards the end of summer or early September. Any and all advice is appreciated. 2015 27' Serenity and 2015 Sierra GMC 1/2 ton.

My only advice would be to take the route thru the wind river range. I 80 to Rawlins, and then up through Lander and Dubois. It is some of the most beautiful country I have ever seen.

I have been to YSNP probably 7 or 8 times in my life, most times going through Cody.

Last time we went through Dubois and I was blown away with how pretty it was.

Taking our second trip to Yellowstone this summer. It's an experience to behold, 4 routes in N, S, E and west. Research your approach, from your area I suggest East.

If your going in 2016...make reservations NOW!

I live in western Montana and the "western gate" to Yellowstone from here is a little under 240 miles. I have been to YS twice in the past two summers and I can offer this. If you are serious about the possibility of making the trip "this year" you need to make reservations NOW. Last year 2015 YS had something like 4 MILLION visitors. June 2015 alone was just short of 1 million. The parking lot at one of the primary attractions "Ole Faithful" looks like parking for a major sporting event.

Here is a link to YS Facebook page. You might want to check it out as you plan your trip:https://www.facebook.com/YellowstoneNPS/?fref=ts

I sure hope you enjoy your trip...planning the journey is part of the fun.

No we are going up north from Kansas City, and then across Nebraska taking I-80. Thus avoiding Denver traffic. Our older daughter who lives in Denver will meet up with us in Cheyenne.

I asked the same question last year from San Antonio to West Yellowstone. Here is what I found. Go through Texas to New Mexico into Utah and north to Wyoming. Do not go through Colorado, we went that rout on the way back and it was awful. I'll pot a link to the thread I had last year.

Here you go: on the second page I wrote out the way we went and which is best etc. I hope it helps. I'll be in Douglas Wy this summer...

Also if you are planning to stay in the park, you'll need to make reservations immediately, they fill fast. I really like west yellowstone, we stay at Mountainside KOA just outside West Yellowstone, loved it. The other KOA nearby is not as nice. I haven't been to Jackson Hole, but plan on hitting that in September.

Let me know if you need any other info, I don't mind sharing.
