Houston to AZ via New Mexico

Hello Fellow A/S Enthusiasts:

Will be driving out of TX on I-10 thru San Antonio towards AZ. Won't be stopping in San Antonio and wondering about some good overnight stops along the way.

Have been to Alpine, Marfa & BB National Park.

Any TX points of interest I should know about or nice places to spend the night?

Planning to drive through Las Cruces NM and interested in White Sands Monument and read Gila Hot Springs also worth seeing.

Winding up in Phoenix and Yuma area.

There are the San Franciso hot springs in Glendale NM. There are some piddly springs right next to the parking area but downstreamn a half mile on the Gila River is a swimming pool size hot spring. If you have a 4/4 with high clearance you can drive down the river bed. While there see "The Catwalk".

A nice stop near Tucson is Picacho Peak State Park.

I think the place is Glenwood, NM, well off the beaten path. Wife's mother lives there and she likes it that way. I don't know about the hot springs but The Catwalk was wrecked by floods earlier this year.

There is a very scenic route over the mountains then through Safford, AZ to Phoenix but you better have good brakes going down the winding mountain road with very high steep edges. If not don't do it.

We've visited this area many winters, having settled on Tucson area as a good home base. Phoenix is now way, way too big for us.

Davis Mountains State Park is a nice stop over. Check out the McDonald observatory about 13 miles away. Good star parties at night.

Yeah, your right Glenwood. Too bad about the Catwalk. Hope they rebuild it.

The UFO stuff in Roswell is pretty much tourist trap stuff. You might find the "UFO Museum" interesting. There is also one of several ufo crash sites that claim to be the genuine 1949 crash site. Not much to see but dirt, grass and cactus. There is a kind of nice state park east of town called Bottomless Lakes. Don't know if it is open though.

Have done that route a few times and have stopped at Palmetto State Park which has a landscape similar to Florida, South llano River State Park and Balmorhea State Park which has a large natural spring pool. Davis Mt. SP is nice too. If you intend to swing north to White Sands, Oliver Lee SP is nice. On the way you could hit Carlsbad Caverns and Brantly Lake SP. Past Las Cruces is City of Rocks State Park. Don't care much for RV parks except to sleep.

Faywood Hot Springs, north of Deming and next to City of Rocks SP, offers camping soaking and tranquility.
