Houston Area Campgrounds?

We are trying to locate a reasonable, nice campground close to downtown Houston. Our son now lives there and we thought it would be nice to be able to take the AS there for short visits. Unfortunately, there are no convenient state parks nearby. My limited internet research does not show anything except a couple of relatively expensive RV resorts. Does anyone have a suggestion? How far out of town do you usually camp when visiting Houston?

Thumbs up A suggestion.....

I see you are coming from Austin.
Red Oak RV resort is on 290 just west of Hempstead....but it looks like a new facility and the is no shade...trees are very small.
For a GREAT experience....go to Brazos Bend State Park...a real Texas Treasure...especially since it has the George Observatory...one of the largest telescopes available to the public in the US.
Unfortunately, it is so popular, you better call for reservations....

Howdy!

Not sure what you mean by down town. Houston is a very large city. The closest I know of near the down town area is All Star RV Resort located on I-59 near the Beltway. Coming from the Austin area you may consider Traders Village just off 290. The closest State park is Stephen F. Austin

What part of Houston does your son live in? There are several CG's S. & S.E. of the Astrodome area

He lives in the "Montrose" area...within 2 miles of downtown. So I guess we'll have to use one of the closer in "resorts" ($33) about 30 minutes away, or one of the state parks about 1 hour or so away.

Howdy!

If your looking for cheap then check out the county park located in Tomball "Spring Creek Park" it FREE! The web site is Precinct 4 Parks.

If you want to be close I would think All Star RV Resort for the area of Houston your talking about.

I like to use this site to determine various "conditions"; i.e., neighborhood surrounding campground/freeway noise/public transportation/bike trails/restaurants/shade trees, etc.

RV Park Reviews :: Houston, Texas ( TX ) - RV Parks and Campground Reviews

Generally I find that with enough reading of comments, map searches and comparisons, and checking other "clickable" campgrounds listed that I have an idea of what campgrounds to ask questions about online.

Good luck.
