Hoover Dam by-pass: pic's of progress

We took these pic's at begining of May,09 while crossing Hoover Dam. Looking at pictures shows Arizona on left, Nevada on right.

We will be traveling over hoover dam next month. Is this picture taken from the dam and looking towards the gorge? Looks amazing. How many man made wonders will they build in that area?

Vinnie- Yes, the top photo was taken from top of dam & bottom taken approaching dam from AZ side.

We try to get up that way once a month (have to get lottery ticket) so we'll post pic's of progress on new road for all.

It is truely amazing watching as they build in that area.

We toured the dam last winter during a camping stay in Vegas for a week. Well worth doing if you can afford the time rather than just driving over the dam.

We say many signs miles from Hoover dam saying that trailers were not permitted across the dam any more (a 9/11 thing) and no-one could tell us if that meant just 18 wheelers or also RVs as well, so we didn't take a chance on routing that way with the AS.

When we got to the dam (TV only, AS left in Vegas) we spoke with the security folks at the highway stop approaching the dam. They told us RV's are ok, but that they will stop you and look inside the RV.

Thanks Brian,

Thats great information. I never even thought about that. Would be a real bummer to turn around and head back to the major hwy.

Thanks Vinnie

There are checkpoints as you approach the dam from both, the NV side and the AZ side.
Both have separate lanes, one for cars, other one for cars with travel trailers or motorhomes.
Every time we have crossed in the MH the highway patrolmen inspect all the pull-out drawers outside then do a visual of the inside. I don't think we were ever delayed more than 10 minutes and most of the inspectors seem to have an interest in Airstreams.

Anytime you have contact with them and it doesn't cost any $$$, it's good in my book!

Vinnie- I'm just guessing but the rate they are going 3 weeks should put you there just about the time they will be joining the bottom arc.

Thought I would add if you will be approaching from the NV side I would try and cross at night or early in A/M. We usually get there before 7-9 A/M and havn't got stuck in a long wait at the inspection station. There has been times when we were returning from AZ side around noon-1 P/M that the line of traffic on the NV side was 4 maybe 5 miles long.

Early A/M will also help because expect delay's in AZ between the dam and Kingman as they have construction projects ongoing and sitting still in traffic with summer temp's rapidly approaching gets old fast. Yesterday we sat still for 12-15 minutes but good luck was with us as we were stopped in the shade from the road cut-out.

Can't wait for that to be finished, that's a long way around between Nevada and Arizona.

Wow, 4-5 miles long? Now im not even sure I will consider this option? Not sure i can get the entire gang up and going at that time of the morning. Three teenage girls here.. can get ugly if i disrupt the delicate process of waking up

Thanks for the info.

Vinnie- My wife seems to think the time the line was extremely long was because it was a holiday weekend. Now that I'm re-thinking about it it's probably closer to 3-4 miles and that's not to say it's always backed up that far. Besides, the wait ends up being well worth the view, especially if the youngsters have never been there. Didn't mean to scare you away from seeing it just trying to give a heads-up on possible delays.

Thanks.

Depending on the temps that day we will see if we should go that way. I would like to see it for ourselves and the kids would love it. Keep the pics coming.

I found the rules for crossing Hoover Dam. http://www.usbr.gov/lc/hooverdam/crossingguide.pdf

I still think we are going to do it. My lab will be in the crate in the bed of the truck.. she will not be happy about it. Especially if they use a sniffing dog.

Greetings from Hoover Dam

There's a little bit more progress with each picture.. The inspection was very formal and once I opened the door to the trailer he walked through and then stepped out and said i can go .

He then gave his water bottle contents to our dog that was already well hydrated but gave him the sad lab eyes..

The bypass is amazing and the Hoover Dam is always a must see.
