We will be on the road from Albuquerque to Las Vegas between the 5th and 12th of October. If the bridge is not open at that time, can we tow across the dam or should we plan another route?

From what I understand, you can tow across the Hoover, just be prepared for a long wait and have the keys to the compartments at the ready.

I don't do long wait very well. I think I will continue on to Laughlin from Kingman and go up the other side of the river.

Thanks for the reply.

No, it's even worse than that; 68 is a crazy, dump down the hill and a monster climb up the other side. Continue on I-40 and take 95 north to get you to LV.

Our local news just aired a segment saying the 240 million dollar bridge will have an opening ceremony today, for pedestrian traffic only. It went on to say that all the tickets have been given out, filling some 70 double decker busses.

The segment ended reporting that the expected opening for vehicle traffic is still about three weeks away.

I'll keep you posted.

I was in Vegas last week and took a tour of the dam. They had the last segment in, but the approach road wasn't completed. I saw an Airstream cross the dam, waved, but didn't get a wave back possibly because I was walking and not IN my Airstream.

That is one BIG dam bridge! Many many moons ago I jumped out of perfectly good airplanes - and one day a year they open the "New River Bridge" to base jumpers. Picture me and three Navy Seals getting ready to do a base jump (my first). I put one leg over the rail, watched my kneecap vibrating like unbalanced running gear and realized that my body had more sense than my brain. I opted out. No one was killed but 4 people were injured. Sprains and a broken ankle or two. This bridge or rather the gulch under it are far bigger. I bet someone walks across the bridge with a backpack on, and it turns out to BE a parachute. It'll take him a week to climb out of the gulch!

Can't wait to take that bridge when we go back north, It'll cut hours off the trip and I expect, WHAT A VIEW!

An article I read recently stated that the concrete walls of the bridge are so high that people in a car can not see the dam while crossing the bridge. This prevents "lookie lous" from slowing traffic and peope with fear of height from freaking out.

In addition, there are wind speed monitors that will close the bridge to high profile vehicles after a certain speed is recorded. This info will be reported as far away as 100 miles from the bridge to give drivers time to choose an alternate route. Also if arriving from AZ to visit the dam you will have to enter from the NV side. The road in AZ at the dam will be closed.
