historical sites with 3 hours of Baltimore MD

We would like to go to an area within 3 hours of Baltimore, Md. that has the following attributes. We like learning about American history as well as hiking/biking.
We would prefer a campground that is quiet but that has electric hookup. Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland are all possibilities but I'm not sure where to start. We are going to Gettysburg first so that one is out.

Maybe consider making Gettysburg your home base, as it is very close to both Baltimore and Washington DC, and there are several nice campgrounds that are reasonably priced. Just a thought ?

If you want to explore SW Virginia, try Highland Haven, an Airstream only camp spot in Floyd county.: www.vahighlandhaven.org/‎

Definitely check out the Blue Ridge Parkway. I'd highly recommend, time permitting, a sampler of Thomas Jefferson's works, in particular his Poplar Forest "retreat" outside of Lynchburg, and of course his masterworks around Charlottesville: Monticello and the University of Virginia campus.

The Shenandoah Valley is beautiful and filled with many Civil War sights within easy reach of a centralized campsite choice which lets you leave the trailer behind. You might want to check out this fairly new national park: Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Park - Cedar Creek & Belle Grove National Historical Park - Cedar Creek & Belle Grove National Historical Park

The Staunton, Virginia area has much to offer: check out the Frontier Museum (http://www.frontiermuseum.org/) voted best Historic Museum, best Overall Museum, and best Outdoor Adventure in the Shenandoah Valley.

If you're just looking for a base, Delaware has two state parks that are quite nice - Trap Pond State Park and one other whose name escapes me. Trap Pond is approximately 90 miles from Baltimore, albeit over the infamous Bay Bridge (can be traffic problems). VERY quiet and lots of hiking/biking trails. No sewer hookups.

Other quiet options include Pataspco State Park near Ellicott City in Maryland. We stayed there with our 30' and barely got in the site (narrow roads), but once we were in it was quite nice. IIRC it's water and electric only. Lots of history, very quiet, and within easy striking distance of Baltimore and DC.

Also Assateague Island Nat'l Seashore on the Easternshore of Maryland. Pocomoke State Forest on the river. Ocean City on the Atlantic lots of full service campgrounds. Harpers Ferry area.
