Definitely check out the Blue Ridge Parkway. I'd highly recommend, time permitting, a sampler of Thomas Jefferson's works, in particular his Poplar Forest "retreat" outside of Lynchburg, and of course his masterworks around Charlottesville: Monticello and the University of Virginia campus.
The Shenandoah Valley is beautiful and filled with many Civil War sights within easy reach of a centralized campsite choice which lets you leave the trailer behind. You might want to check out this fairly new national park: Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Park -
