I've travelled a bit of the Mother Road and a couple of stops that are a definite are the La Pasada Hotel in Winslow, AZ along with the Watchtower and the El Tovar Hotel along the south rim of the Grand Canyon. These were designed by Mary Coulter and are worthy of a visit. The Harvey Girls used to wait on customers at La Pasada. Peach Springs, AZ has some interesting Route 66 memorabilia as well. In fact, the movie Cars was loosely inspired by Peach Springs' story after Interstate 40 moved the traffic south. Gallup has the El Rancho Motel which used to be a famous haunt of the movie stars when shooting westerns out in the high desert.
I have a couple of books on Route 66 and they are both very interesting. First is entitled Route 66 - Lost & Found by Russell A. Olsen and the other is entitled Route 66 by Tim Steil and is a great picture book along with some history.
Keep posting to this thread so we can all follow along. I have always wanted to do this trip.
