High winds

I am traveling East through Wyoming today and there is a high wind warning for I80, with gusts to 65 mph predicted. Some will be tail winds, but from Rawlins to Laramie they will be cross winds. I am using an Equalizer hitch. First trip with new trailer. No experience with trailers in high winds. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

Keep your speed down to maybe 55 or so is about all I can offer. If it still feels uncomfortable, pull off and wait it out for a while. That can be a nasty section of road.

That would be an exhausting tow in such conditions. As a cruising sailor, I avoid leaving port in really adverse conditions. I would take it off the Interstate, find a more protected scenic route, or layover for a day.

Very good advice. Especially the layover part. Trouble can find you on a good day. No use looking for it.

Good advice to avoid high winds if possible. If a high wind catches you unexpectedly, pull off somewhere and turn the rig so that the TV and the trailer point directly into the wind.

I towed our Airstream home when we first bought it in about a 35-45 mph gusty crosswind. The trailer and the Reese sway control the PO gave me handled it beautifully. 65 is a little much, IMHO.

We got caught in a leading edge of a major storm in West TX earlier this yr with reported 60+ mph straight line winds. They were cross winds to our travels and needless to say there were some white knuckle moments. It was raining as well with some large pockets of hail heading our way so we continued on. We dropped speed limit to around 40 and made it through it. We were pulling a 28FC with ProPride hitch. No sway of the trailer, but if could have avoided would have. Good luck and safe travels.

Good morning!
We are in central Wyoming today as well with the high winds. This was our first tow out west 4 weeks ago, all went fine. We are living out of the camper as we are helping a friend finish a house. Question: where do I find info or does anyone have suggestions on tying down the camper or securing it? Is there a need with the wind gusts predicted at 60 mph?

I can only comment to 45-50 mph cross-winds on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge into Anapolis - I was one of the last vehicles over before they shutdown the bridge during that bad weather day. I am using friction sway control only and kept my speed down to 45 or 40 - never once felt a tug; the airstream swam through it like a fish

65 is approaching hurricane forces - I think I'd really consider the 48 hour projected forecast before making my decision.

I drove through this section of highway a few years after leaving the Balloon Festival. I have the same trailer, size wise anyway, and an Equalizer hitch. Never had a problem but did slow down to the 55-60 range and had a tail wind most of the time. I was ready to pull over and wait it out if needed. I think that is great advice. Never drive in a situation that you are uncomfortable about.

Getting off the interstate and continuing on a smaller highway isn't really the best advice in my opinion. How can you be sure that this new road will be "sheltered" and if you do have trouble it might be tougher to get help or find a place to pull off. Stick with the main route with traffic in case you need help. You will usually always be in a place with cell reception too.

I drove home from St Augustine to Fort Myers in a tropical storm my first year of ownership. Semi-trailers were practically changing lanes with the gusts moving to 45 degree angles. The Airstream was amazingly stable. We felt the push, especially when from the front but it was a testament to the design. That said, we had to get home. An alternate wooded route would be an excellent choice.

Did the same trip earlier this year, also with equalizer hitch, 30' FC and F350 Diesel. Winds about 60 cross and then turned to tail wind. Just slowed down from my usual 65mph to about 50-55mph as did most semi trucks. The tail wind was great - 16.1mpg.

My motto, one of many, is if not comfortable, stay put.

We've towed in those conditions with our Airstream and ProPride hitch when all other RV's were sitting it out. Not uncomfortable at all. Couldn't do it with our conventional hitch and probably not with a conventional travel trailer.

Sometimes exceptional products provide exceptional performance.

When we brought our new to us 75 Overlander 27' home through South Park CO there was gusting winds up to 50 mph. Our TV is a 99 SuperDuty diesel 4x4 xtra cab short bed with a camper shell and we were using a regular hitch, no WD or equalizer.
Other than bending trees, bushes, grass, and birds flying funny, we had no idea we were in high cross winds until we stopped in Fairplay and were getting tossed around by the gusts.

High wind warnings pretty much covered all of Wyoming yesterday. I was on I80 over to Laramie, then up to Medicine Bow and ended up in Glenrock. Was going to stay in Medicine Bow boondock site but the winds were vicious. 2015 Classic with ProPride and stayed at 60mph. Couple of gusts made a bounce but overall no different feel or drive, even when passing semi's on 287 out of Laramie.

The aerodynamics on an Airstream really make a difference.

Side note, two massive grass fires started just north to Casper covered I25 with smoke.
