Camping plans and the Jan 2018 government shutdown

Some pundits are putting the probability of a Federal Gov't shutdown this Friday at better than 50%. Better make contingency plans if you were planning on staying in a National Park this weekend. I ask all to please refrain from political posts when replying to this thread, but constructive suggestions are welcome.

Here we go again...

Consider a broader view.

At any time, it may be necessary to change plans due to weather, breakdowns, traffic, or other events outside our control. The smart thing is to be prepared (like the Boy Scouts do) and be ready to handle changes in itinerary, routes, or places stayed. A minimum amount of extra food and supplies, fuel, water, and propane on board to handle a change is just good planning.

Better, perhaps, is not putting too much into hyper-detailed planning. Travel can be more spontaneous and interesting that way.

Here in Florida, finding alternative accommodations can be challenging this time of year. There is always a chance that we will see another temporary spending bill passed. There have been 30 or so continuing resolutions in the last several years. The last time they closed the National Parks due to a Gov't Shutdown was in October of 2013. Here is a link to that notification: https://www.nationalparks.org/connec...-you-need-know

Preparedness

I agree with rmkrum, my Sovereign is always stocked for the turkey and deer seasons as well as any emergency that should happen while it is parked in the driveway. I restock the trailer as necessary and eat what I have had in the trailer over the last year. The wife is always needing sugar for coffee and if we ever run out in the house I have the choice of going to the store or head out to the trailer.

already there

So we are already in a national park and have paid through 01/23/18. Will this affect us, too. Will they ask us to leave or can we stay through our original reservation? I don't see that addressed anywhere. Can someone enlighten us on this situation?

shutdown

I am refraining, however, last year was my 1rst year AS camping and we left without any reservations. I knew I could do it but I learned a costly lesson. We were able to stay at a couple of National Parks near Bryce Canyon and again in Washington State. The Parks were $9 a night for seniors WOW the rest of our trip was $32-$50 a night unless we stayed for a week, then it was approximately $$22-$25 a night. We should hope the parks stay open and agreements reached for the benefit of all. Don"t forget to vote this year.

I don't see it mentioned anywhere either, but since employees are furloughed, I would suspect it would.

You would think that with one party controlling everything in Washington we wouldn't be here, but as the title says, here we go again... I'm just glad that unlike last year when my wife and I spent our anniversary in a national park (actually two) in the winter, we won't have to worry about it.

Let's hope somebody in Washington can get folks on the same page to prevent this shutdown, so you and others can continue to enjoy our wonderful park system.

Scheduled to be in Death Valley NP this weekend and Joshua Tree a week later. If I have to make other plans due to the shutdown, we'll adjust.

This is good advice whenever you are on the road. Unless it's a holiday where you can anticipate that it will be crowded everywhere, and you NEED to be at a specific place at a specific time, I'm learning that we can have just as much fun and adventure without the "hyper-detailed planning". It's good for us to get nudged out of our comfort zone sometimes.

I think it's a wait and see situation in regards to the national parks/government shutdown situation at this point. Speculation is probably a waste of time and mental energy.....as we all know, things are different these days with our federal govt so I don't think we can use "the way things have been done in the past" as a valid indicator

I had a trip planned to Hilton Head, then the hurricanes hit. Life happens. You change plans, move on, be happy.

If a shut down happens. Yes the government will close all NP and NM just like a few years ago. It a way they punish us voters.

May be appropriate to show concern about the stewardship of our National Parks. Recent resignations of advisory board members seem to reflect significant friction with respect to the development of improvements and policy. Budget shut down would be a near term impact that need not happen, but both that result and future changes or non-change are at risk unless reasonable and informed considerations prevail.

Conservation, protection, enhancement and enabling of access for our National Parks, Monuments and BLM holdings needs reasonable and informed positions to be supported. Compromise is required and middle of the road concepts are a more logical solution than "my way or the highway"; don't touch anything"; and "we can make money from this" approaches that originate from any source.

Be very careful with your vote. It is the folks that the voters send to our local, state and federal offices who make these decisions. Not all decisions are made by those folks, but the people they appoint, approve, hire or fire, have an impact. The groups who lobby elected officials and agencies have more impact than most of us realize. The blame is ours if we send folks who do not do the right thing for our country. Educate yourself and vote responsibly.

No, this may not be a refrain, but it is a time in our history when honest respectful discussion is required to improve our country. If all we have in common is a shiny travel trailer, at least it’s a start. Hope to see you down the road when the weather is good enough for safe travel. Until then, hunker down and stay warm. 😊 Pat

Lots of great state and county parks to use.

It is a scare tactic. The Federal government never actually shuts down (we "subjects" are not so lucky)

All critical services will stay running. It's a shakedown to get what they want - they just shut down stuff like parks to pizz us off and spend what they want anyway

If the DC regime shuts down, I will be too busy celebrating to miss their campgrounds.
