Help with road trip in June from Oregon, through MT, WY, back home

This is our first long road trip with our new trailer....it's a little nerve racking. We're just used to short weekend trips.

After looking over the maps we are thinking Portland to Cour d'Alene, ID, follow I-90 to West Yellowstone (maybe stop around Missula). From Yellowstone, head south to Jackson Hole, WY. From Jackson Hole we're headed home - hitting Hwy 26 to Idaho Falls - landing in Boise for an overnight then to OR, back home through our most favorite town of Bend!

Any feedback of great places to stay overnight or places to stop along the way would be greatly appreciated! Thanks & happy travels.

This may not fit perfectly into your travels, but we went to Yellowstone via the northeast entrance, which takes you over the Shoshone National Forest. Not to take anything away from Yellowstone or the Grand Tetons, but Shoshone NF is spectacular! Just stunningly gorgeous. You go over Beartooth Pass at a little north of 10,000 feet elevation. Again, this may not really be on your path, but if you had flexibility you would not be disappointed.

We don't own an AS yet (but, it's coming). I travel to JH, Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks several times each year. Both parks are a MUST!! I hear that all of the RVcampgrounds in Yellowstone are very nice but, you must make a reservation. In JH, I photograph moose at the Gros Ventre Campground. From what I have seen there and have read, this is a great site to park you AS. It's about 12 minutes from downtown JH but, you won't believe the moose that will be running around the campground b/c it's up against the river. Pretty spectacular. I've spend many a very early morning at the Gros Ventre Campground. Have fun. I'm envious and can't wait till we get ours.

You're going through my old' stomping grounds (northwest)! ( I'm from northern Idaho, travelled through bend countless times on the way to grammas house .

We went to Yellowstone the year before last and while it was beautiful what was most stunning was grand Teton national park. Holy smokes the scenery knocked the socks off of Yellowstone ( and all in the group agreed, wasn't just me).... I would highly suggest staying for at least a day or two there. Jackson WY is fun... And the Rockefeller preserve with phelps lake is fantastic - highly suggest a day hiking around there. Phelps lake is stunning.

We're headed from Colorado over to Boise this summer for my bros wedding and will be making a bit of an out of way detour to mosey back up to Jackson and surrounding Teton area before returning home as it's just so wonderful.

Travel bird! I was just looking at gros ventre last night as an option for our return trip from Boise this summer. Great to hear its a good place... Noted on a site it wasn't as busy as the other parks which was attractive to me ( I'm not usually one for the more populated campgrounds). I think it's official now.... Gros ventre it will be!

Thank you, Hi Ho Silver RV, since I have never stayed at the Gros Ventre Campground, that is great news. I do love that campground for my photography and the abundant wildlife around. Last September when we were there photographing the Moose, I was so envious of all the Trailers and campers around. So, hopefully, this year, we'll be there with our new AS.

BBQMAMA, please let me know how your experience is at the Gros Ventre!!!! Cheers!

I've heard a lot about Sun Valley - so yes that is a possibility. I've never ventured out on this side of town so there's so many places I want to go to, but so little time

Thanks for the great recommendations. I am so looking forward to seeing moose!!! I love them!!! I am little concerned that we are traveling with our two dogs - but I guess we will just go for it and land where we land. A bunch of people at work have been telling me to hit Glacier National Park versus Yellow Stone, and I've heard great things about White Fish, MT. Oh my - I don't know how you guys choose your path because this is the most difficult thing ever

Let me get this straight. Your biggest challenge is deciding between Glacier and Yellowstone? Make that my problem.

One of the lessons we learned somewhat early on was to not try to do too much. We now look at every trip as a "qualifier" - just testing the waters, and determining if we want to go back (of course we always do).
