Heading South - for surf, sun, sand, shrimp & suds..

Hi again,

Time to get on the road once again - got all hitched up, loaded up, fueled up and hitting the road south at 0'dark:30...

Planning on getting down to just into South Carolina tomorrow night, then Weds night in southern Georgia, and then Thurs afternoon should get into Topsail Park in the Florida Panhandle (Can Opener '08). We will be leaving there on Sunday to Ft Myers to visit some friends for a day, then on to Key West for most of the rest of the month.

Looking forward to the warmth as it is too cold around here. Even though I grew up in Minnesota (Duluth) I have gotten spoiled and really do appreciate the warm weather down south. At any rate, a couple of pics attached showing we are ready to go and I'll try and take a few each day if something interesting comes up (other than me sitting on the beach in a lawn chair with a cold beverage in my hand...). This should be about a 3,000 mile run in total.

best regards, Dave

Dave, I'll be traveling in spirit, and with much envy. Have a great time.

Where in KW do you camp when you're down there?

Thanks - Pat.

Hi,

We're going to be staying at Boyds Campground which is about at mile post 4 I think.

www boydscampground.com

I have not stayed there before, last time was at a hotel but I saw the campground off to the side of the road last time and remembered to look for it, and I have heard lots of good things about the campground. I have a waterfront site so I'll post some pics when I get set up.

regards, Dave

& here is a pic from the campground web site.

Florence SC & Valdosta GA

Hi again,

Came down thru VA, NC, SC, and now in GA...

Only had to make one U-turn, and I was still in my subdivision only a mile from my house when I suddenly remembered I had forgotten ---- my Jimmy Buffet CD set---- just can't go to Key West without Jimmy Buffet... So I doubled back and made my wife run in and get them (but for some reason she was not amused... maybe it was too early in the AM ???).

First nite is pics 1,2,3 at the KOA in Florence, SC. Think that is the 3rd time I have been there, nice place and it works out as a good day's drive from my house. Cooler than I thought, was 31 degrees (outside) when we got up this morning. Was a nice 67 inside which seems to be the best temp to set the furnace at.

Then came on south and are now at the KOA in Valdosta, GA which is a nice big place and seems very well laid out (pic 4). But, the lady at check-in said it is only supposed to be 19 degrees tonite ??? Say What ??? I thought I have been driving "SOUTH" for 2 days..... Shouldn't it be warmer ???

Anyway, tomorrow will hit Topsail Park in Florida and the Can Opener '08...

regards, Dave & Shari

Boyd's is nice. Close proximity to Duvall Street in Key West, and right on the water. A little tight, but fine for a short stay.

I especially liked the fly-overs from the NAS which is almost right next door!

Have a great time!!

We rode the city buses on some occasions rather than trying to take the truck downtown (and park!) each time. The office at Boyd's has schedules, and there is a stop just outside the park. However, no matter what the schedule says, the buses run on island time.

Naples Florida

Back on the road after 3 really wonderful days at the Can Opener Rally (see other thread if you have several hours to peruse a very nice event).

Left from Topsail around 8'ish yesterday and drove all day, stopped for dinner at a friends house, and finally got to Naples around 9 PM. I hate driving in the dark and finding the campground with no daylight and this was no exception.

But anyway, after a couple wrong turns a doubling-back (19 footer is nice for U-turns) we found our way and pulled into our spot at the KOA here in Naples.

The sites here are really short, not sure what you would do with a 30 footer and a big dually pickup as you can see in pic 1 my 19' is almost end-to-end.

Got up this morning and got my first mosquito bite !!!!! Ordinarily I would be mildly irritated, but this is great as it means we are finally far enough south for bugs --- and if it is warm enough for bugs it is warm enough for me...

I was just talking with the guy across the road from me with Minnesota plates on his 5er and he says there is snow back at his place ??? and freezing cold ???

I am just sitting here at the dinette with my view out the screen door at palm trees.... See my 3rd pic if any clarification is desired...

Still 250+ miles to Key West but should make it after lunch today...

regards, Dave & Shari

Great posting. We left Top Sail and turned left, it looks like we should have turned 'right'
