My parents found King Creek Campground (NF), near Bryce, years ago (in the 70's)...we met them there on one of our treks out to Utah, and had a great time...

Dixie National Forest - Recreational Activities

On an earlier trip my folks also 'found' Kodachrome Basin SP - it wasn't much in those days, they had the place to themselves...the Park Ranger lived in Cannonville and made quick friends with my parents...

Kodachrome Basin State Park | Utah State Parks

My dad was a an old time Ham Radio guy (W6DDU), and when the Ranger, named Shakespeare, mentioned that he couldn't even listen to an AM radio way out there in Kodachrome, my dad said he had an idea on how to help get some reception...

Upon returning home to Northern Calif, my dad wound a special, tunable antenna coil for Shakespeare's radio and brought it back to Utah a few months later - It worked great and really cemented their life long friendship...

Shakespeare took my parents on several personal tours of the surrounding countryside, showing them places never visited by the public with many ancient's artifact sites - Shakespeare lived in the area all his life, and was the first to find the Arch that's named after him, in the southern area of the park region...check the lower RH side of the map...

Kodachrome is off the beaten track, but well worth the visit if you have the time - I see from their current info, it's much improved from the days we were there in the 70's - no amenities in those days - it was 'dry' camping in the truest sense of the word!

Have fun on your trip - Utah has lots to see if you take the time to explore!

Wow, tons of great advice! Thank you everyone.. We may have to stretch this trip into a second week. It's just tough being away from work for more than 5 days.. I know, that sounds ridiculous..
Lot's of home-work to do. Thanks again. I'm more excited about UT than I was before, that's for sure..

My wife, dog and I are planning a similar trip, tho more like five weeks, in hauling up into southern Utah from Las Vegas, and many of these pieces of advice are very helpful. We tow a 32-foot 1989 Excella behind a Ford F-150 and am wondering if we can get that size rig in all of these parks? Thanks.

We were in Zion, Arches, and Dead Horse SP with our 31' with no problems (although Arches was a little tight). I think you'll be fine.

If you are planning to go through the tunnel at Zion NP, there is a 50 foot maximum overall length limit! Otherwise, you have to go to Hurricane, Colorado City and into Fredonia - the long way around.

Wanted to let everyone know we ended up going to Utah. I went back and forth trying to decide on Utah or back to NW Colorado for the 4th or 5th time.. Heard too many pine beetle stories about CO, so we went to Utah.
Had a blast. 2 nights in Arches, then 3 nights in DeadHorse State Park outside Canyonlands.
Both Campgrounds were great. Beautiful campsites, clean, nice hosts, great trip!
First pic is Devils Garden campground in Arches.

Second pic is from campsite in Deadhorse Point State Park CG outside Canyonlands.. ALSO, Deadhorse has elec hook-ups, that was a nice surprise!!

I just wanted to thank every one that recommended campgrounds, etc..
We had a great time..
BTW, the Tacoma pulled our Bambi out from St Louis and back, through the passes etc. w/o any issues.. (We came back highway 50 southern CO and KS, for a change of scenery) I love SW CO..

Thanks for the eye candy. Perhaps we'll get to the West next year.

Just returned from my annual fall trip to the Zion area. I stay at Watchman campground (electric hookup only).

We drove through the construction area near the tunnel last week. At this time all traffic is escorted through the tunnel in a one way direction. The delays were not terrible. However the road conditions were rough, dusty, and muddy due to the watering of the road to keep down dust.

We just drove through there two weeks back (once again) - but this time had to take a detour as the 70 was closed where the 15 meets it due to a fire that the Utah National guard started.

The little detour had us go due East where we met up with a road that took us due North right into 70 where we were able to proceed East again.

Granted it was at night - what a wonderful road and so much beauty - Utah is really an amazing state as I keep driving through it at various points!

Looks like you had a great stay!!!
