For dog friendly - we took our pup on the trails at Snowy Range - West of Laramie WY - east entrance near Centennial WY.
By the way - Best steak I ever ate was just west in Saratoga WY at the Historic Hotel Wolf....

Did you guys meet up with Loudruff? They were in that neck of the woods and I know they are headed Mt. Rushmore on their way back East. Safe travels!

Best time to go we think is spring as soon as the campgrounds open. That is late May, but all CG's are different. Busy, but not nearly so much as later in the season. The busiest area in around Old Faithful and south to Grand Tetons NP. We've stayed in tents and hotels there, but haven't yet brought the trailer. It is so big, it is easy to spend weeks or more there, but the longest we have spent is a week. Having been to Yosemite and Yellowstone in shoulder seasons, I think Yosemite is busier as most tourists at Yosemite stay in the valley and that is a lot smaller than Yellowstone. Alsop, Yosemite is a lot closer to large cities and it is easier to get to.

Glad the volcano didn't blow while you were there.

we were certainly surprised at the crowds, after labor day and all....all the campgrounds were full...all the parking lots at the "attractions" were full.

it made no difference how early we got up and moved around there were hoards of folks milling around.

we stayed a week and drove about 100 miles a day just circling the park trying to take it all in...

we always talk about the big eruption that is coming to yellowstone...when it comes it will matter not where you are....

After my second night there without power and with the low of 27 degrees (above zero) at night, I needed to leave. Many of the campgrounds and stores/deli/food sources are closing Friday September 25th.
That said I had a great time - and the lines are much shorter than I've experienced during summer vacation.
Great photos!
