Head for the Hills!

Vernon, Sarah, Mac the Border Collie and Epiphany the Airstream (ETA for short) are heading out for a 1800 mile romp and we thought we would bring ya'll along. With some side trips we may hit 8 states in 7 days. Our plan is to depart from Jackson MS on 8-12-07 with the following route;
Stop in Starkville for a friends wedding, continue up the Natchez Trace to Tishamingo State Park for Day1.
Complete the Trace to Nashville and continue to Bardstown KY for day 2.
On to Winfield WV with stops along the way for day 3.
Day 4 will be a work day followed by a short hop to Beckley.
On to Asheville NC via the Blue Ridge Parkway for day 5.
Hop over to Falls Creek Falls State Park for day 6.
Back home on day 7.

This will be a first for Sarah, she’s never done more that a full day on the road at any given time. Wish us luck and we will try to post updates from the road

Sounds like a great plan. We've been thinking about a Natchez Trace-Blue Ridge Parkway trip. Let us know all the details. Good luck.

Meltdown

Well, everything is loaded and it was tough! The temps are in the 100 degree range and the fridge is really struggling at about 50 degrees. The truck and Epiphany are washed so we head out tomorrow.
It's time for a cool beverage

Mac has known we were going for three days now. All I did was move the Airstream into the driveway...he won't let me get more that 3 feet from him. He has been carrying a ball the whole time. I guess with that in his mouth he's got all of his stuff packed

Day 1

First leg of the trip was a stop in Starkville, Mississippi, to attend the wedding of dear friends oldest son.

Next stop, Tishomingo State Park, at Milepost 304 along the Natchez Trace Parkway. Nice campground …exploring the area and trails led us to massive rock formations blanketed in moss. One trail in particular was a stairway carved out of rock that led to an impressive overhang …… further exploring led us to a swinging bridge built in 1939 which crosses a small creek. We feel like royalty having the entire campground to ourselves, for $16. Remote? No cell coverage!

Day 2

Day 2
About 10 degrees cooler today. We did see 103 degrees yesterday.

On the road north up the Natchez Trace toward Nashville. Stopped at a bunch of roadside areas but the best was Fall hollow between mile post 391 and 392--a waterfall scene nestled among the woods along a short “unimproved path” worth the small hike though-two different falls.

Interstate through Nashville was fun (not!). Saw an Argosy headed south but the rest of the USA was headed north with us .

The Bluegrass Parkway from Elizabeth KY to Bardstown is a great smooth drive. Tonight’s stay is at the My Old Kentucky Home State park. 20’ behind our camper is Tee #1 so we are basically camping on a golf course! 7:30 pm and we are wiped out – when does the sun set here?

day 3

Slept in late. We decided to go for a tour of one of the finer facilities in Kentucky, Makers Mark Whiskey. Hint- don’t tow to the facility! It’s about 20 miles but will take 40 minutes to get there due to the twisty road. We were 5 minutes late for one of the tours and would have to wait for the next, then a 1 hour tour, then 40 minutes back to the campsite… we ended up skipping the tour and just hitting the gift shop for a DIY waxed bottle of their finest.

The Bluegrass Parkway gets a little rough in places but nothing like I64 just west of Huntington WV. If you see a sign that says “Rough Road” believe me it is the understatement of the day. It should say “Sections Missing”. Tonight we are at a small road side park 2 miles west of Winfield, 30A, water and sewer for $15. Nothing fancy but convenient.

Love the vacation. I have tent camped the same spot you had at Tishomingo State Park some years back. Keep it coming.

Day 4

Well, we titled this thread ‘Head for the Hills’ and today we found ‘um. But first we had to depart our scenic highway side campsite. I had a work day so we didn’t hit the road until about 4:00 headed for Wytheville VA. I64/77 south from Charleston is one of the roughest roads I’ve every towed on. In places the concrete has been replaced in 6’ sections, every 6’. I honestly think it would have been better to do 75 in the left lane than take the pounding in the right . The icing on the cake is the fact that it’s a Toll road so we were able to pay for the experience. The Dodge pulled all of the hills at 65 mph with ease and by kicking off the overdrive, went down the 5% grades at 60 mph without using the brakes. The computer showed 17.5 mpg until we got into the hills, now we are down to an indicated 16 mpg. We arrived late at the KOA and have settled in for the evening. Tomorrow we hit the Blue Ridge Parkway! So far, 4 states in 4 days.

Love those pictures - seen everyone of those spots hundreds of times. You should have tried the turnpike in the late 70' and 80's when it was mostly two lanes and you had to stop every few miles for blasting. Did you get Mac a Tudors Biscuit....

In the hills

One more item from day 4. While sitting on I-64 for a construction delay, one of the workers tapped on our window and told us we left our keys in the Airstreams, door

One photo from this morning, our campsite in the Wytheville KOA. I had to wait until today when the neighbors pulled out since the sites are really tight. No complaints, $39 for full hookups including cable TV (thats still twice any amount of the trip).

30 miles until we hit the Blueridge and we are discussing adding one more night to our trek.

Ha! You are a local! Nope no Tudors biscuts since they don't have a pull through that will accomodate Epiphany.

Thanks for all the good reports and photos. Blue Ridge and Natchez Trace top our list of favorite roads also. An extra day in the Blue Ridge area will definitely be worth it.
