Day 6

Falls Creek Falls State Park, TN, no cell phone or wifi here . Wow is the best description. For the timid, the northern entry to the park will get you to say Wow (PG13). Twisty and turney but slow so no problem towing Epiphany to registration. The loops in Campground E are probably too tight to drive through so we found a site to back into. Upon checking we find the fridge is 60 degrees due to a broken flex propane line (Running gear balance? Nah rough road rotated the tank) . These ‘fridges heat up quick in this record hot weather so we tossed the expendables and headed to the Gift Shop and General Store. Fresh fruit, steaks, t-shirts, camping supplies, all the way to local artisans’ signed originals – they have it all. Off to the Falls. Unbelievable views, at 256’ they are the tallest free fall west of the Mississippi. If the falls were unbelievable then the Gorges have to be breathtaking. You can walk to the edge of a flat rock and guess what? Nothing is below you (that will get your, um, tummy). Just after dark we were visited by the camp pan-handler, only this time it’s a skunk. He walked right into the camp, looked at us and wandered off to the neighbors’ picnic table. Sorry, no photos as we were busy holding Mac, he wanted to play with the kitty…

Day 7

OK, one more for the night. I'll wrap it up tomorrow. Tannehill State park, AL, no cell or wifi due to the storm? Keep reading. We decided to avoid I-59 thanks to feedback from Klattu and took the state roads to Warrior AL then 65 south. Great route except the 4 miles of 8% grade which were no problem in 2nd gear. We arrived at 4:00 and I headed for Registration while Sarah hit the Crafts demo cabins. By 6:00 we had cooked supper and it started to sprinkle with lots of thunder so we turned on the NOOA radio. “Severe Thunder Storm Located near Tannehill State Park”, this can’t be good. Then it hit. The campground flooded and if it wasn’t ballasted, it floated off. The water rose to our bottom step then slowly started receding as the rain slacked so we popped in a movie and went to bed.

final day

Sunday, Day 8 headed home. This morning looked like a ‘The Weather Channel’ scene. Limbs were down, trees blown apart by lightning, heavy equipment and chain saws running so we did the logical thing and headed to the breakfast buffet at the park restaurant. After a $6.00 meal we gathered our soggy stuff and headed home.
Now for the big news.
2000 miles, 2 books on tape, 8 days, 7 nights in 7 campgrounds in 7 different states and we get 1:45 minutes from home and see, what’s that?, THE FIRST AIRSTREAM SIGHTING OF THE TRIP! A newer mid 20 footer pops over a hill from the other direction and is gone in 10 seconds. Where is everybody?

We are finally home and the only failed item is a propane line.

I will review all of my photos and see if I missed any that might be of interest, or if anyone has questions about any of our traveling, I'll post further

FYI the lowest MPG was 1 tank at 13.3 and we averaged just over 16 with the overhead computer showing 17.1

Well in that case, it was ya'll! We were in the midst of a 18 wheeler sandwich and had no time to even blink the lights. I did have time to notice how nice your Argosy looked.

You guys had quite a trip. And you got the underside of the truck and trailer washed courtesy of mother nature at the same time. Really appreciate and enjoyed the pictures and commentary. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for posting your travel log. I really enjoyed it. Was amazed in the amount of ground you covered in such a short period of time.

One last shot

I found one more cool photo as I was looking through the files. Out the back window as we wound up the Blue Ridge Parkway, the road past us in the right side of the frame.

Vernon/Sarah,
Great thread, I enjoyed your trip and especially your commentary. I'm with you....where is everybody? On our trip around the US this summer-maybe 12 Airstreams on the road in 13,000 miles (not counting WBCCI in Perry).

Mac

Where is everyone?

Besides aturner4u's Argosy, the only Airstream we saw was a semi perminate 30+ footer at Falls Creek Falls, It had a portable garage over it and a deck so no photos. On a weekly average I actually see more Airstreams on my daily 130 mile commute down I-20 than I saw on our trip! That makes our math match, 1 sighting per 1,000 miles.

I love seeing an Airstream hauling down the road, coming or going, it doesn't matter. I guess because we see so few of them it does make the sighting even that much more exciting, and then the anticipation of seeing another one. I even get excited seeing one in the driveway or yard of a house and often they are not even being used, just sitting and waiting and waiting and waiting to go do what they do best.

Anyway, it is fun to watch for our fellow Airstreamers, and even more fun to know they are probably looking at us with similar thoughts - holy cow, another one actually being used.

Can you imagine what it would be like if all 20,000 plus members of this Forum made a commitment to get out and camp on the same weekend, any where they wish, at least once a year. So every one of us, or the vast majority who have functioning and tow-able trailers would do our best to tow our trailer somewhere on Airstream weekend. We would certainly make a statement all over NA that there really are a lot of Airstreams out there. So whether it's individually with your family or yourself, or with some others, you go find that campsite and give the world some visibility into how many of us have this illness. And then post pictures on the Forum of your weekend and share it with the rest of us in the weeks following. What a lot of fun. Any time we meet people at gas stations, in the campgrounds, etc. we tell them it's Use your Airstream Weekend all over NA or Globally, or what ever. Just a thought.

Thank you for the awesome travel diary and pictures. I love seeing others adventures, especially when I'm just here waiting to go on mine.

That flood looked a bit scary!

How old is Mac? He (?) is sooo cute! Our BC hates the truck.. big bummer... I think he was sent into the dash as a puppy (with the breeder).
