Love the vacation. I have tent camped the same spot you had at Tishomingo State Park some years back. Keep it coming.

Day 4

Well, we titled this thread ĎHead for the Hillsí and today we found Ďum. But first we had to depart our scenic highway side campsite. I had a work day so we didnít hit the road until about 4:00 headed for Wytheville VA. I64/77 south from Charleston is one of the roughest roads Iíve every towed on. In places the concrete has been replaced in 6í sections, every 6í. I honestly think it would have been better to do 75 in the left lane than take the pounding in the right . The icing on the cake is the fact that itís a Toll road so we were able to pay for the experience. The Dodge pulled all of the hills at 65 mph with ease and by kicking off the overdrive, went down the 5% grades at 60 mph without using the brakes. The computer showed 17.5 mpg until we got into the hills, now we are down to an indicated 16 mpg. We arrived late at the KOA and have settled in for the evening. Tomorrow we hit the Blue Ridge Parkway! So far, 4 states in 4 days.

Love those pictures - seen everyone of those spots hundreds of times. You should have tried the turnpike in the late 70' and 80's when it was mostly two lanes and you had to stop every few miles for blasting. Did you get Mac a Tudors Biscuit....

In the hills

One more item from day 4. While sitting on I-64 for a construction delay, one of the workers tapped on our window and told us we left our keys in the Airstreams, door

One photo from this morning, our campsite in the Wytheville KOA. I had to wait until today when the neighbors pulled out since the sites are really tight. No complaints, $39 for full hookups including cable TV (thats still twice any amount of the trip).

30 miles until we hit the Blueridge and we are discussing adding one more night to our trek.

Ha! You are a local! Nope no Tudors biscuts since they don't have a pull through that will accomodate Epiphany.

Thanks for all the good reports and photos. Blue Ridge and Natchez Trace top our list of favorite roads also. An extra day in the Blue Ridge area will definitely be worth it.

Day 5

A spectacular day with spectacular viewsóGot on Blueridge Parkway at Virginia Milepost 308. Narrow, two lane road; stopped numerous times at various points of interest and overlooks. Fortunate enough to find a hidden area where a marked trail led to beautiful rock formations, the trail was carved out of rock along side a mountain, Mac the Border Collie loved leading us through this trail. Around 3,000 ft we stopped at Linville Falls; a trail behind visitors center leads to various overlooks, all with breathtaking views. Up to this point we were able to negotiate the route with OD off and in the Tow Mode, 40-45 mph up and down the hills. But here, the turns get tighter and the drops more severe, not only was Sarah gripping the door handle but Mac the Border Collie was perched between us leaning with the S turns and digging his claws into the upholstery. At 6,000 feet I decided my little family needed a break and pulled over to let everyone take in the scenery with ground under their feet. We were above the treeline! The last 50 miles were in 2nd gear at 30 mph with some pretty good romps on the brake to keep us slowed. We were all glad to finally make it to Asheville, find a McCampground and end the day with a Restaurant Steak. Epiphany did great and I have no regrets with the route except our expectations of the travel time for the final miles. Too many photos to post so I sling a few of the best to everyone.

Traffic?

What is the traffic like on the Blue Ridge in August?
We've driven it before Memorial Day and after Labor Day and it is practically like having a private park to drive through. Although it is only a 2 lane road, we'll often travel many miles without seeing another vehicle. It is slow, but soooo relaxing and beautiful.

We estimated that 1/2 of the users were motorcycles! the split seemd to be 1/3 v twins with couples, 1/3 trikes and the last 1/3 crotch rockets.
The photo is horrible but I'm attaching it anyway- if you can't see the small detail it shows a motorcycle with the rider flying off!

The traffic was very light, being a weekday helped I suppose.

That sign is great! Must be a trike or big v-twin, they don't corner so well I'll stick to my trusty Triumph Bonneville. Takes the tight and twisties flawlessly!

Good ole Starkville

Hiho,

It is good to see pictures of the "Chapel of Memories." Especially since it is now 6 years and 1 day since my wife and I were there saying our vows. Thanks for the pictures and memories.
