GROWL!
Last night we made it to Palo Duro canyon just south of Amarillo and took some great photos I was dying to post but FIZZIT! The laptop fried. So today it's off to best buy to get the Geek Guys to diagnose the problem, smoked motherboard.
I now have a new laptop, does it look different from that side?

Anyway, 1st update will be some of the wildlife we have seen (not the couple in the tent across the campground ). The Road runner and Turkey were in our campsite, the others either in the campground or on the roadside.

More photos to come

Nice to hear you tried 82, any comments about road condition (narrow shoulders or?).

Thanks for the pictures. We were up to Sandia and Tynan, Texas on Saturday night for a party at the Tynan Dance Hall (talk about old Texas cool!) and saw paisanos (roadrunners) aplenty.

What campgrounds at Sherman and in the Panhandle; and would you recommend them?

Most important, how's the running gear; can you tell any difference from behind the wheel?

First off, the route is GREAT. we jumped off I-20 at hwy 69 and rode it basically to Sherman. Fairly smooth 2 lane with very wide shoulders for passing. 82 is a limited access highway for most of the route, both have a 70 mph speed limit. Al in all, a far superior selection to the interstates.
Campgrounds? well the Sherman selection is a rv parking area. Nice and clean with a good staff but cramped in gravel spots.

I must have been really tired when I read this, it took me 10 minutes to figure out what you were talking about

catching up

Sherman to Amarillo. 287 was very light traffic with a headwind and went through some neat small towns although a mandate that I exit the new four chances really slowed us down . We arrived at Palo Duro Canyon just after lunch and selected a remote site with great views. Plenty of time before the 9:00 dusk to look around. The shadows really change the way things look as the sun sets. The road in is not for the faint of heart!

Amarillo to Santa Fe.
A last minute decision resulted in us heading straight for Santa Fe. Arriving late, Mrs. HiHo had the duty of digging into the Woodalls Guide for a full hookup, downtown campsite. Lots of big rigs in a clean but unremarkable facility. For some reason the SOB's weren't stopping until they got here . We decided to stay 2 nights and tour downtown. The buildings are really neat and the selection of wares offered by the local artist are second to none.
Tomorrow we break camp and head northeast into Colorado and on to Jackson Hole. We are taking a chance and shooting to arrive on Friday Night!

A flip of the coin resulted in us heading NE into CO this morning. We left Santa Fe and went up I-25 through Las Vegas NM and into CO for some WOW changes in scenery (I guess we blew past The General...sorry Rodney). The top was crossing into CO and suddenly seeing the snow topped mountains. We dropped off the interstate at Trinidad CO and hit the Santa Fe trail, a 2 lane road and 'went rural'. Tonight we are in Liman CO (watch the Weather Channel, it's wild here right now).
Top 2 for today? Pronghorn Antelope on the side of the road and a 30 mph tail wind helping the MPG-O-Meter show 19.5 mpg!
Tomorrow it's off to WY!
More photos as we get the chance to review the stash

Todays re title for this thread should be Head for Cover. A quick update...we were in the middle of all the horrible weather today. North CO and southern WY was NOT the place to be today. It seems every location that got hit, we were at today. We even got some time in a storm cellar this afternoon. Zero visibility, hail, 40 mph winds and tornadoes across the street from the campground have us mentally whipped but thankful that we are ok.Lets try again tomorrow.

Is this thing on (tap-tap)? I know your out there, I can hear your breathing...
Anyway, today was much better than yesterday. No hail, no tornadoes, just some rain, snow and LOTS of wind. We made it to Rock Springs at the KOA (stands for Kamping On Agregate). Tonight it's grilled Red Fish and a DVD. Tomorrow we head for Jackson Hole.
I am super impressed with our towing combo. No issues at all with side winds, steady as a rock to the point of being scary. I didn't realise how bad the wind was until a lunch stop when the wind took the truck door out of my hand.
The 1st 2 photos are some of the rock formations the the Indians say were formed by playful spirits. The 3rd is elk mountain with todays fresh show and the final is tonights camp and proof that I finally figured out how to make the camera stop taking blue photos...

Probably no more wifi for a while so we will upload what we can via the PDA.

Elk Mountain is one powerful being, so to speak. When I have driven the Interstate west-to-east it seems to be "there" forever.

Can't say I want the weather, but that's what makes it re-creation. Love to be up there! Glad to hear about rig stability.

Grand Tetons. We pulled into Gross Ventre campground yesterday, got set up and started looking around the area. Visibility was really bad with rain showers but we did see Bison walking right behing our site. The Rangers weren't too thrilled to verify our photo of the tree was infact a fresh bear mark. Today is clear and warm so we are in Jackson doing the tourist thing as well as refilling a propane tank that went empty at 2:30am...
On the way into town we spotted several Moose, one with twins!
We are camped right across from a 34' that is headed for Bozeman, real nice folks.
Tomorrow we will break camp and head into Yellowstone

This lovely lady and her twins were laying next to the road this morning. With the limited internet access I have no idea when we will get online again. The local cell companies are blocking cell based access so we have to find a hotspot for any chance.

Wild Wyoming Wind

Great story. We did a nearly identical trip in 2005. We starting laughing when you mentioned the Rock Springs KOA "hard site." Holy cow, what a rough-edged town, good only for providing an onward-to-the-Tetons waystation. At least they had broadband. Recalling the 40mph cross winds on I-80 still gives me the shakes.

Enjoy the beauty of upstate Wyoming, and mind the moose!
