Gulf Coast Points of Interest

We're planning an extended trip starting the end of August, the first leg of which will end up at West Palm Beach, FL. We're planning on visiting New Orleans and will be looking for other points of interest along that stretch of the Gulf coast.

Anyone out there have some suggestions for interesting stops? We'd appreciate the help.

Mississippi Gulf Coast casinos, some of which have RV parking. Even if you don't gamble, they put on excellent buffets at a reasonable price, and have live entertainment. Official listings for Hollywood Casino and Silver Slipper Casino both mention RV parking. Haven't been to either one, yet, but friends of mine have.

There's Buccaneer State Park in Mississippi, not too far from Biloxi where the casinos are. You could stay at the park and drive to the casinos from there.

When you come to New Orleans, you might want to stay at Bayou Segnette State Park on the Westbank, and visit downtown by way of the ferry boats. Beats fighting New Orleans traffic and New Orleans parking, even though ferry tolls are going up now that bridge tolls are gone.

Florida's Forgotten Coast

We drove "Florida's Forgotten Coast" early last November and it is beautiful. It is a stretch of U.S. 98 that runs east out of Panama City to roughly Bald Point. St. Joseph Peninsula State Park has a great beach. It is popular, so you may need reservations. Apalachicola has a seafood festival the first Saturday in November. You can't miss this if you like seafood.

The Algiers ferry, which you would take if you stayed at Bayou Segnette SP, is free, unless something has changed very recently.

Day parking at the ferry is $5, or $10 on a weekend. Some park on the street, we think you are better off in the lot, as there is an attendant there at all times. We have done this many times, never a problem.

The old coastal towns in Mississippi and Alabama are beautiful, so take a bit of time to poke around Biloxi, Gulfport, Mobile, etc.

There is also a very nice AS dealer now in Gulfport.

Have a good trip!

Visit the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida.

Spend a day or two at Top Sail Hill SP just East of Destin, Florida.

Very recently, since the last election, where voted abolished the GNO bridge tolls, and the city turned the ferry operation over to a private company. Still better than trying to park downtown, though.

Don't be so quick to leave Florida. You might think about stopping in SW Florida, particularly Sanibel Island and Fort Myers. You can actually camp on Sanibel (Periwinkle Park Campground) and bike to many places you'll want to visit. There a a number of state parks along the way up the west coast too. You won't be disappointed.

The Jean Lafitte Scenic Byway runs through New Iberia and the heart of Acadiana winding through rice and sugar cane fields, marsh land and salt dome “islands,” as it hugs the coastline of Louisiana. This highway offers scenery you wouldn’t otherwise see on a trek through the region and gives visitors an idea of what life was like in times past.

Don't take Govt. advice

I saw yesterday that the POTUS was all for support of the Gulf Coast....from Ft Lauderdale, to Cape Kennedy to Jacksonville. I have nothing else to say.

That's not any worse than J. Danforth Quayle leaving Hawaii to go "back to the States."

Mobile, AL - There are 2 state parks very close to the Battleship USS Alabama - Mayher State Park is just east of the battleship on the causeway and also just a bit further into Spanish Fort is Blakeley State Park which is also very nice with full hookups. Blakeley has some very interesting civil war history.

St. George island and the forgotten coast not to be missed. I have lived in FL 35 years and have passed by, flown over that area often, but never checked it out. Was like the FL of my youth.

That's one reason I am not in politics. I said something in utero that can never be forgiven.

If you make it to the Naval Aviation Museum, go a little early and tour the Pensacoa lighthouse across the street. St. Joe bay is a special place all its own. One of the most beautiful places in all of Florida.

Anyone here an "Easy Rider" movie fan?

The whole movie was about traveling by motorcycles to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. Billy and Captain America rode the wrong way through Louisiana, all the way to New Orleans. If you watch the movie and know the area, you may catch the error ...

The scene in the graveyard happened in the same cemetary where my grandfather and his family are buried.

There was a cafe in Simmsport where the movie crew encountered "Louisiana Justice", swiftly. It is no longer there.

The levee where the ride ended as they were shot gunned down is not far from there from what I hear.

Camping on the Gulf in Destin, Florida is a unique opportunity to park and camp right on the crystal sands of Destin's beach. Crack your rear window and listen to the waves crash all night. Campgulf.com
