Gros Ventre Campground

We hope to camp in Gros Ventre in mid-July this summer. Does anyone have suggestions on getting a spot? I understand that it is FCFS. Also, are their "favorite" spots we should look for?

We have camped in Grand Teton and Yellowstone before but never Gros Ventre.

Any suggestions welcome!

I think it's the best campground in the Teton Parks. Since it's FCFS, sometimes it seems like grand central station. I would get to the Ranger Station Check-in in the morning (right after posted checkout time). The website (Campsite Photos) has the following listed favorite sites: 6, 8, 24, 26, 43, 65, 66, 86, 89, 90, 108, 111, 117, 119, 125, 134, 144, 150, 169, 182, 190, 292, 295, 301, 313, 326, 330, 332, 340, 342, 352.

I personally liked the far loops located upriver.

Have Fun. BTW: Moose frequently are spotted in the campground.

We love the Tetons. Stayed at Gros Ventre September 2015. We had reservations, and when we checked in the ranger who helped us gave us her favorite site which was 228. It was a large site with a beautiful view. This was in the area with no hook ups. Check out this loop I think you will really like it.

We've stayed there before and will be back in September. We go with no electric and run the generator a bit, or this year will try a Renogy suitcase solar panel. We are over 60 years old so the senior park pass gets a 50% discount on the fees, but you pay something like $25 or $30 a night more to get electric. That also sometimes gets you a paved site, or at least an easier access, more level site- if that matters to you.

We think it's a great location as my wife (Sam) is there for the Jackson Hole One Fly, which has it's events in Jackson, and it easy access to great bike rides for me.

Walk the grounds and look at the check out dates written on the posts. Pick the one you want and wait for them to check out or even ask if they will give it to you. If they put in the box, go ask the ranger for that site and tell them they just checked out.

Be very nice to people. It works. i got a site there last July.

Gros Ventre CG is quite large. Arrive fairly early. If full wait for someone to leave. There will usually be room. If not Asherton Creek CG is beyond Kelly, and has little pressure.

Yes Atherton Creek is a beautiful spot. Further out of the way and very quiet.

I would love to hear if the Renogy suitcase was adequate for you. I am considering the purchase of those.

Gros Ventre seldom fills in normal years but this year, with the NPS Centennial, attendance may set new records. If, as suggested, you get there before 1100, you are probably good to go. There are 31 electric sites but they are pricey, even with a Senior Access Card.

If you are going to run up into Yellowstone, go early as last year we had 45 minute delays at the South Gate.

Wayne and Sam, we plan to be there Sept. 11-14- look for a 25' AS with stickers all over it!
