So many have great historical destinations that are not readily known.
You probably know a good one close by, please add.

In my neck of the woods...

We have:

The Airborne Museum, a Confederate Arsenal Museum, Fort Bragg JFK Center (at least I think the public can still visit it) and just a few miles in either direction, Guilford Courthouse Revolutionary war battle field, Bentonville Battlefield, House in the Horshoe (revolutionary war) and I am sure many more that I am not aware of. BTW all of these are in central/piedmont area of NC.

Wright Patterson AFB, Dayton OH has the AF Museum. It is great, covers history of aviation from the first flight at Kitty Hawk to present day. Has some of the retired Air Force One planes, most recently, the one that carried JFK's body. Everything is free, but take your walking shoes. It is a big place. If you are federal employee, you might be able to use their camping facilities, number is 937-257-2924. Some bases have their camping open only to military, some open to both military and civilian. I am civilian employee of 27 years, and we have used the lodging there before, not fancy but very clean and very inexpensive!

the rock island arsenal museum is a must see!

every weapon ever produced there is on display including captured equipment from the indian wars to iraq.

located in rock island, quad cities. stop to get a pass at the gate and follow the guard instructions exactly or you will get kicked out as it is an active arsenal.

no cost, all you have to do is state (and prove with ID) you are a us citizen.

Ditto on the USAF Museum at Wright Pat and the Naval Aviation Museum at NAS Pensacola.

There is an Air Museum at Warner-Robbins (Macon, GA) that has an SR-71 as well.

It's nice but the Naval Aviation museum at Pensacola is the best!

Here's a list of military museums in Michigan. We've got French Forts, British Forts, you name it...
The State Museum in Lansing has lots of Civil War stuff too...
My hubby (a tarheel) won't be happy with this but I have to recall my favorite President Abraham Lincoln's remark when the Michigan troops came forward "Thank God for Michigan"!

Steph, I think Honest Abes comment was in response to hearing about the Michigan Cavalry Charges during the battle at Gettysburg, PA. They were led, by the way, by an unknown, newly appointed, (by mistake) General by the name of George Armstrong Custer. If memory serves....fyi Ed

In addition to the Hall of Valor at the museum you can also visit the confederate prisoners cemetary on the island. Many of the buildings still in use today were built by these prisoners. There is also a small park that has a static display of captured weapons including tanks knocked out during the Battle of the Bulge in WWII. I have contributed items to the museum in the past and it has some great displays and information.

Just went to the Aviation Museum in Warner Robins last week. http://www.museumofaviation.org/ They claim its the second largest Airforce Museum. My Dad was based there in the 50's During the Korean war. Have to check out Pensacola next time I am down that way.

There is a private museum between Benbrooke and Granbury Texas (South of Ft. Worth) called the Pate Museum. Not all military but they have displays of military aircraft, as well as civilian vehicles and more. Some very cool stuff, well worth the donation I paid at the time. (It's been a few years, but it's still there.)
BTW, they have a landing strip and an annual aircraft Fly-in.

Another one that I found interesting is the Tuskegee Airmen at Moton Field It is now a NPS site and is undergoing major work. They currently are in the early phases but still a very interesting place to visit. (benefits of having to travel for work )

My son and I enjoyed the Patton museum at Ft. Knox, TN. Here you will find a well done display of the general's history and accomplishments. Did you know he was an Olympiad? There is also a display of WWII vehicles and other military stuff.

CK, When did they move Fort Knox to Tennessee? When I took Basic Training there in the early part of 1971 it was in Kentucky. I wouldn't bring this up except for the fact that it is also the United States Gold Bullion Depository and backs up all U.S. Currency with gold. So if we lost it somewhere in Tennesee I'm positive that somebody would've noticed!!! LoL. Ed
