GPS Points of Interest (POI) Databases

I posted this information in another thread - but thought it might bear repeating in its own thread.

There are a number of websites that have Points of Interest databases that are easily downloadable into most GPS's - they are great - this is one that I've used to update our GPS with complete (and current) databases of WalMarts, State Park, National Park, Provincial Park, KOA campgrounds, Good Sam campgrounds, Casinos and Interstate Rest Area locations - when we are travelling we use at least one of these databases almost daily:

POI Factory | new & interesting places for your GPS

After using the forum search feature I was surprised that there didn't seem to be a lot of readily accessible information on this service - if you have a GPS - do a lot of travelling - and weren't aware this information was available then it will be worth your while to do a bit of exploring on this or other similar websites.

Thanks Jay -- as a matter of a fact I just uploaded a bunch of POI's to my new GPS last week from this site -- very useful indeed.

I have a Garmin GPS NUVI 660 and suddenly the voice stopped. Any ideas what it could be and how to fix it?

The easy answer to your question is that the voice got turned off or the volume turned down - hitting the wrong menu item is easy to do and easy to correct.

If this isn't it then the hard answer is that you need to do a bit of work - Garmin support may be your first call - or you can search their Knowledge Base:

Good Luck,

Jay

Woody is right - I have had many unpleasant conversations with our tour guide - in truth, she has suffered a fair bit of verbal abuse. The only time we allow her to speak now is if we are in a new city in heavy traffic - and my wife is quick to turn her off the second she has passed her momentary usefulness.

Ben...for the Nuvi non-op issue you mentioned...you might try the Maint start-up...

with the Nuvi OFF,
hold your finger in the upper, LH corner of the screen while turning the Nuvi on,
continue to hold your finger to the screen until the Maint screen comes on - if it will come on at all, that is, in your case...if it doesn't come on, you'll probably have to send it in for a factory repair, etc.

This method of start-up, among other thins, will allow you to erase ALL your FAVORITE waypoints at one time - if you have a bunch you want to get rid of, perhaps - you can duplicate them in a PC file if you use EasyGPS.com (and your GPS-PC accessory cable) before deleting in your NUVI, for a back up.

I'm having a problem in that I can't load the POI sofware from Garmin due to some glitch (%APPDATA%) in my PC that I haven't found a cure for, yet...any help out there for this one? The darn MS site has a 'workaround' for the %APPDATA% error problems, but of course their instructions for Vista don't match what's on my Vista window - A curse on you, Microsoft!
