Laptop
I have been using my laptop PC with the DeLorme GPS navi system. Works great and you don't have to squint at those tiny little screens!
Just got the 2008 update with the Topo feature. It provides USGS topographical overlays to the road maps so you can actually see the elevations and inclines of the road grades and surrounding terrain. I like it!!

I have used a Garmin 76CS for about 3 or 4 years and love it. It is portable and easy to use for hiking or boating. If hiking I will load the topo on it. When traveling in the car I load City Navigator (auto routing) and usually set the route and download it. The main minus for auto navigation is that it does not speak the commands. It beeps and you have to look at the screen.
I also use it when traveling in rent cars.
I rarely use paper maps anymore.

Bump.
I thought with all the gift cards at Christmas, it might be that others were looking for a GPS and this was a good thread with links to a few others.
Enjoy the day!

gps truck routing feature?
In one of the many threads on gps I read about truck routing that keeps you off of tight roads or turns but I don't see it listed in features for Garmin, which is what we are leaning towards. Anyone have a gps unit with that feature, or is it called something else? Any recommendations on the new Garmin units? The 770 says it has hands free cell phone but then it says you have to "tap" in the phone number. Do they have a model that dials by voice? thanks

Garmin nuvi 660
Well we just received our new nuvi 660!! I registered it online and am going to use it today on the way to Boston to check it out. It has all of the features I can think of and some I didn't!! It's really cool. As far as truck mode you just hit the pic of the wrench, push the navigation icon and then there is a vehicle icon that's already set to car/motorcycle. Hit that car/motorcycle icon and then you have a choice of pedestrian, bicycle, truck, and bus. Well gotta go try this baby out

I love my Garmin NUVI 680. It's easy to use, and has a large screen.

I just received a Garmin Colorado 400t for my birthday and now don't know how I survived without one! The unit is brand new for Garmin -- it just came out this year -- but you can find it substantially discounted thru amazon.com.
The unit came pre-loaded with topographical maps which I use when hiking. You also have the option to purchase one pre-loaded with marine or hunting/fishing maps. I also loaded the North American city maps on it for use in the car. The unit can't be beat for geocaching as you can actually download all the info about a cache directly to the unit (i.e., description, coordinates, hints, etc.). Additionally, when you find a cache (or not) you can mark it as found (which will update your account on geocaching.com the next time you connect to the computer) and then it will allow you to navigate to the next nearest cache. I call that "power caching".
If you are looking for one unit to use as a hand held and as a car model, then I would recommend this one. Here is a link to a review about its major features.

Same problem here, Jim. I hear my wife mutter things like "No, we're not taking Highway 404 for only one exit!"
My son leaves his unit set to "tell" directions in Swedish. He says he's learning it to pick up chicks. HAR! Jah, dat zoundts funny, jah?¿?
