Good restaurant in Mission Viejo?
I will be traveling to California for a weekend here soon, and wanted to meet a friend for lunch in Mission Viejo. Anyone have a favorite restaurant there they can recommend? Medium price range is about as high as I am willing to go (no steak and lobster lunch, sadly).
And yes, I do plan travels around food.

I lived in MV from 1973-81 and my family stayed on there until 1995. One of my all time favorites for the food is:
Capriccio Italiano Restaurant
25380 Marguerite Pkwy # D
Mission Viejo, CA 92692
(949) 855-6866
It's a "sleeper" in a strip center mall but the family owned/cooking won't disappoint! We still go there when we are in town to visit...never had a bad meal.
Another favorite was:
Tortilla Flats
27792 Vista Del Lago
Mission Viejo, CA 92692
(949) 830-9980
Tortilla Flats This one sits on the lake and has a nice view...great for Sunday Brunch.

Dana point
On the bluff above Dana point was a restaurant named "The Quiet Cannon" Wonderful view and good food. Lunch menu reasonable. Most places in Southern Cal offer acceptable food - Location -Location -location

I'd second the "Quiet Cannon" (although I think it's just called Cannons now (it used to be a favorite date-spot "back-in-the-day") but it's about 15-20 miles from MV...
If you don't mind going 10-15 miles +/-, I would also recommend either Ramos House or El Adobe both are by the old Mission & train depot in San Juan Capistrano.

Oh, wow, great suggestions, everyone! And thank you for the specific info, Shari--that makes it easy!
Keep 'em coming! I will go see what I can find on the above ones on Google... See, that's the problem with posting questions like this--now I want to go to ALL of them, and I only have two days!

I would also suggest you check out the 'Cedar Creek Inn' in San Juan Capistrano...it's right off the freeway 5 and across from the Mission as well....I have NEVER been disappointed, and they have the most FABULOUS salads and lunch specials...and good sized portions you might want to share...YUMMM! They have a varied menu that would meet anyone's taste, and you can eat 'outside' on their beautiful patio courtyard with bouganvilla all around!
....maybe call me and I'll meet you! Just kiddin....well,....maybe if you pull my leg.....

I just thought of another idea as well.... a little further south in Dana Point on Del Prado (Highway 1 or 'Pacific Coast Highwayl)...on the corner of Golden Lantern....a place called 'The Rennaissance Cafe' ... you can eat indoors or outdoors ...on patio with fireplaces...every evening there's LIVE music, bluegrass, jazz, guitar, or classic rock depending on the band that nite...no cover charge and they have the BEST Rennaissance burger ! About $9.50...with a little special macaroni salad gourmet style. One of my favorite places to go for some relaxing FUN and good eats! If you try the Salmon, it's REALLY GOOD and not too expensive as well...really a local type place and not touristy.

Debra, your suggestions sound wonderful as well! My problem now is going to be picking one out of all these tempting choices!

Oh, you think so!? I'd have a hard time choosing...
The first two I suggested were MV specific...but my absolute favorite for lunch of those would be Ramos House in SJC...although El Adobe was where we had our wedding reception in 1981 and was known as one of President Nixon's favorite restaurants back then!
Ramos House is a great place for a leisurely ladies lunch - very uniquely California.
You'll have to let us know where you end up!

I have to also agree with Shari that Ramos House is very 'special'...and located in the Los Rios Historical District of San Juan Capistrano. You can check out their website Ramos House Cafe very, very, CUTE place, little herb gardens around and when you walk in the district which is very small, maybe two blocks, streets lined by old Eucalyptus trees and some old California bungalows and tiny antique shops, you definitely feel transported back in time to a more gentile era in time... you get the idea? Nice quiet area to spend a lunch or brunch....the menu says that a Saturday or Sunday brunch will take you to about $25.00 but includes a champagne libation of sorts. Also the historical district is just across the train tracks to the main part of town and you can enjoy the Mission as well...if you're there mid March...I believe the 17th...that's when the 'swallows' return to the Mission...and the town is very excited and run special events.
If you're spending the day with your friend and not just a lunch break I would highly suggest that you take her to San Juan Capistrano. Mission Viejo is....well, .... shopping mall area and kinda regular stuff, like you'd find in most upscale USA suburban locals.
If you MUST stay in Mission Viejo then like Shari suggested, 'Tortilla Flats' is a very nice Mexican restaurant that is located right on Mission Viejo Lake...
you can sit outside and watch the ducks and paddleboaters...
You will have a hard time picking...but I think that maybe it depends on how much time you have with your friend, ...just a lunch? or a day.....

Okay, an update. My friend can't eat Mexican food and is not thrilled with a ladies' luncheon place (he is male and Brad will be there, too, so ladies' lunching was immediately ruled out ). He suggested we go to The Brig Restaurant at the Dana Point Harbor. Not your most haute cuisine, but looks like a nice selection, and any restaurant that says, "Pirates and Friendly Dogs Welcome" is great, in my book!
Thank you all for your suggestions, and maybe I can sneak in a visit to one or more of the other restaurants, if we "happen" to be around that area at mealtime... I am very intrigued by the Ramos House...

The Ramos House serves men too ~
The Brig will give you a taste of the local flavor ~ it's been there forever! I went to Dana Hills high (in the 70's) in Dana Point - classmates worked there. Besides, the company of friends is most important...right?! It'll be fun ~ enjoy!

That's cool, Shari! The area really looks pretty--it must have been great spending time growing up there!
Brad and I both like tall-masted ships, too, so we're looking forward to seeing that one!
