Good camp ground in Smokey Mountains?
I am looking at taking a trip to the Smokey Mountains sometime in October. Can anyone recomend a campground? I would like it to be in the mountains, wooded and have flush toilets and showers.
Thanks Sam

Sam,
Lots of places if you had a state or region that might focus things a bit. I have one suggestion, Stone Mt. SP in North Carolina. It puts you in the region. We stayed there and were impressed enough to make reservations for this September but a new grand baby had other ideas and we cancelled.

We usually stay in Townsend, TN. It is right on the edge of the park and without the crowds and traffic of the Gatlinburg area. We have stayed at the KOA and Lazy Dayz. We prefer Lazy Dayz. It is older and honestly a little run down but not nearly as crowded as the KOA and about half the price. Staff was nice. Bath house was dated but clean. Either is a good choice. All the campgrounds in the area have fairly " tight" camping spots. They really try to pack them in so just be prepared. October is "high " season in that area so make a reservation asap. Mountaineer campground is also a favorite of several friends but we have not stayed there.

we lived in this area a while and i would prefer townsend.. its quieter than sevierville, if you want to stay a little outside. you can take the backroad through the park and you are within 30 min in gatlinburg. you also have only a short ride to the caverns in sweet water, which is towards the interstate (east) and a nice place to visit.
For myself, the campground in Sevierville as wells pigeon forge campgrounds are just too crowded..
now.. i you come from the NC side, i believe cherokee is a very nice place as well.

Mile High Campground if you can get reservations. Primitive, but all else considered, Perfect.

Lots of wonderful places to stay in the mountains. Near Waynesville, NC there is a campground named Creekwood Farms RV Park we have stayed at a few times that is really nice. Try to get a site on the creek that flows through the park.

I miss it already. This state is flat. Flat is boring.

agree with the suggestions for Townsend, close to Pidgeon Forge and Gattlinburg, but out of the congestion. It is also close to Cades Code. have stayed several times at the KOA in Townsend, the sites are close and the price is high, but most full hook-up campgrounds in the area are pricey. the KOA has some really nice sites that back-up on the Little River.

We stayed in Indian Creek Campground near Cherokee - a short ride on the Blue Ridge from Waynesville. Very clean, nice sites on the creek and plenty of hiking, fishing and site seeing in the area.

Hotels are so low priced up there...unless were staying in Elkmont or Cades Cove...we cannot justify the fuel cost and campground prices when for less we can stay in Townsend at Dock's...or in Pigeon Forge at Norma Dans

Looks like there are still sites available in Great Smokey Mountains Natl Park Cades Cove. We prefer state parks and natl parks vs private but some of the private parks mentioned look pretty nice.

Elkmont is a great campground inside the national park. No hookups, which is fine with us. Be sure to get a campsite next to the river. We've camped there several times, both in the Overlander & in a tent.
