going Florida
we are driving our Bambi 1961 from Dallas to Florida, end of February. Any suggestions for nice campgrounds on the gulf are appreciated. I looked into Baton Rouge but could not find anything appealing for camping. Should we stay in New Orleans? thanks...

Just off I-75 a little north of Tampa is Hillsborough River State Park. It is our favorite. They rent canoes and you can paddle the river for an exciting day. About 80 miles south is Oscar Scher State Park. It is close to the Gulf and shopping in Sarasota. You can take a canoe right from the campground to the intracostal waterway and then the Gulf. Both parks are VERY family friendly and allow dogs.

Topsail, near Santa Rosa Beach - which is where we are headed now.
Also, we haven't been to a FL State Park we didn't like. Further down the gulf coast near Clearwater is Fort Desoto County Park, which might be our all time favorite campground ever.

In Louisiana, just north of New Orleans is Fairview Riverside State Park. One of our all time favorites. In the Florida Panhandle is Big Lagoon State Park. It is off of the Interstate a ways, but it is beautiful and very quiet.

There are several nice commercial campgrounds in Lafayette, Louisiana. It is in Cajun country where there is lots of sightseeing and fine dining.

St. George Island St. Park is very nice, campground just a 1/4 mile from the beach and only a few miles from Appalachicola, oyster capital of the world, and yes their oysters are still good and not affected by the oil spill. This one for sure you will need to book far advance using Reserveamerica.com, better chance of getting in there Sun-Thurs of any given week.
Our next favorite is Lake Kissimmee State Park, wild turkeys, Sand Hill Crane's walking freely through the park, other birds and a good jumping off point for River Ranch rodeo just a few miles east on SR60.

You should definitely take in New Orleans. A few days is well worth it. Our favorite city to visit. Stay at the French Quarter RV Resort and simply walk to the French Quarter! Nice facility and right next to the quarter. Have fun.

Forgot to mention a few other possibilities for you.Check with Casinocamper.com We have stayed in Coushatta Casino Resort in Kinder, La several times, very nice. Also when you leave New Orleans check out Silver Slipper Casino in Waveland, MS. They have a nice campground right on the beach and a few months ago were giving you the first night complementary if you get a players card. Also if you do boondocking, you can stay at Imperial Palace parking lot in Biloxi, MS free if you register your players card with Valet.

bayou segnette state park
I have stayed there numerous times. Take Huey Long bridge to get there.
$18.00 per night. About 20 min from French Quarter. Be sure to ride the trolly car to Audobon park.
Have a great trip!

All ON the Gulf in the Panhandle:
Henderson State Park in Destin, FL
Topsail in Santa Rosa Beach, FL,
Camping on the Gulf in Sandestin, FL
Grayton Beach, FL (State Park)
ST. Andrews in PCB, FL (State Park)
All five of these are great and steps from the sand. We frequent all five of these ... if you have time to spend a few days, Grayton is a quiet beach vacation. If you just want a taste of the beach and get in and out ... Camping on the Gulf is probably best.
