Big Creek Campground outside Apgar road gate. Go www.recreation.gov.
It's right on the North fork of the Flathead River.

If you don't get a park campsite...there are a number of decent places located in or near the town of Whitefish. The west entrance is a short drive from there. There are even more RV parks on the road to Glacier. Depending on the time of your year you want to go....expect to meet a ton of people in June...or when the "Going to the Sun Road" opens....generally around July 1st. The suggestion that GLCMRANGER made is a great one. Actually, you can't take a trailer beyond the Apgar point. This general area is rather compact and there is a lot to see and do in the towns surrounding the WE of the park...ie Whitefish, Kalispell and BigFork. Welcome to Montana!

We were in GNP 2 summers ago and had an awesome time. Got to see a grizzly bear near Many Glacier and saw many mountain goats. The park is majestic it has views from every where you look. See a few attached photos. We looked at the CG at Many Glaciers and asked the camp host about reserving sites and her recommendation was to get there by 8:30 AM on the busy weekends to get a site middle of the week wasn't as bad and like others indicated 10AM is probably fine. We actually stayed in West Glacier CG just a mile from the west entrance. They were full service sites in the woods and not too packed together. Clean and friendly folks. They even had a backwoods outdoor restaurant that was run by the college kids from the local culinary school. We enjoyed great BBQ ribs and he also does a great breakfast. It was a nice break in the travels.

You should also venture into Watertown Lakes National Park while you're in there. It's the Canadian extension of Glacier NP. You have to go through the border so you'll need to prepare for a border crossing. But it's well worth the short drive up from Many Glacier.

Cheers,
Allan

Another vote for Waterton Glacier, and the town of Waterton, itself....one of the most beautiful spots I have ever seen.

If all else fails try West Glacier KOA. Large, destination KOA. 2.5 miles from West Gate. We've been and enjoyed the park, very busy, but quite at night. Outdoor restaurant on our way to do some work camping in Spearfish SD this year we are going by way of Glacier NP. Yes I've looked at a map.

All good suggestions but you actually CAN take a trailer beyond Apgar.

Depending on the size of your rig you can go (take a trailer) all the way to Avalanche Campground on the West Side - Apgar Campground has good sites - like most Park campgrounds there are no hookups and it's first come/served. But you can usually find something unless later in the day. Fish Creek a couple miles from the West Entrance is reserveable - that might be what one of the other posters meant by "Big Creek" but some of the sites are tight.

Outside the park on the west side: The KOA is good, but a little more pricey - the Glacier Campground has all the hookups and less so, San-Suz-Ed nice but between the two in price and right on the road. There are other more expensive places and they do fill up.

"Best" is a relative term! Have fun - spend some time. You will miss a lot if you're there only one or two nights.

Then, there is the whole east side.
