There is also a lot of great info on boondocking sites right here in the Boondocking forum, especially the "cheap or free" threads by Bob Thompson. Don't see any around Roswell, but for I think $10 you can stay at Bottomless Lakes SP, without electric. If the weather is warm, and you like swimming, and you're going north through Santa Rosa, there are several swimming lakes right in/near town, including the Blue Hole, which has a very large, usually empty parking lot for day use.(plenty of room for your rig.) don't know about boondocking in Santa Rosa, maybe there is a truck stop/big gas station? Have fun!

Ufo?

Hi Rodney
Did you get captured by a UFO around Roswell?
We have not heard from you since you were looking for campgrounds and dump stations between Roswell and Lubbock.

Unfortunately, my brothers cancer has necessitated that I travel to Tennessee to be with my family for now.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I guess it is just one of those things in life. At this point there is no real chance of a happy ending, just a hope that the end is as un-traumatic as possible.

Back in the saddle soon

My brothers illness ran its course, and it is time to saddle up again. Sunday morning I will hook up and head west. I have business in Illinois and Oklahoma but should arrive in New Mexico just in time for the September in the pines rally. The Balloon Festival and Pumpkin Chunkin festivals are in the plans for sure.

I'm thinking I may need to take a shot at those trophy trout waters on the San Juan, I hope October is a good time for that. I am looking forward to the fall in the four corners. Life is good.

Trip report

OK, been back on the road for about a week and a half or so now. Been in Illinois and Oklahoma. So far the trip has been work type stuff, but fun none the less. Right now I am camped out at the wildlife refuge. Its hot, but I love the park. The elk are in rut and you can hear the bulls bugle at night. There is another AS in the park, a sculptor from Ardmore in a late 70s rig.

As of now, I will pull out of here Saturday. I'm giving serious thought to hitting Palo Duro on the way west to New Mexico. Once in NM, the first order of business will be hitting some hot springs, then its up north for September in the pines.

Bosque del Apache

Anyone familiar with Bosque del Apache NWR? I was thinking about visiting for a few days late this fall, but before the Crane Festival. Any tips appreciated.

If you want to cranes without a lot of people, try Fruitgrowers' Res. in Delta County, Colo. It's near Orchard City, a municipality that is hardly a city except in name. I think some of them come there first or just keep going. I think there's a website for it. I can hear them each fall and spring flying over the Gunnison R. even though it's 10 miles from here. They fly so high you can't see them and their voices are loud.

We went down last fall, also before the arrival. It was pretty interesting, though on the first day we were nearly eaten alive by mosquitos. (On the second day a front came through and removed them.) There are a couple of pics on my blogsite:

Trip to Chaco and Bosque del Apache, Fall 2008 : Angel Fire Blogs

There's a small RV park a mile or two north of the site. I think it's called Bosque Birdwatchers.

In San Antonio (NM) near the site you can get a green chili burger that even beat Bobby Flay's (meager) attempt!
