A topic I am close too, just finnished working 32 hours straight shutting down the oil refinery I work at in Port Arthur Texas. Only the second time during the plants 107 year history that it has been completely shut down. last time was Hurricane Rita (just after Katrina), now it Ikes turn to drive fuel prices out the roof.
Hurricane Gustav shut down alot of refineries in Louisiana, now Ike has shut down refiners from Corpus Christie to Port Arthur. At least ten refineries are down or drasticlly reduced due to the storm. The plant I work at produces upward of ten million gallons of Diesel and gasoline a day, now times ten and you get the picture of what has been taken out of the supply.
It could be months for refiner restarts iif the strom surge reaches the forecasted 15-20 foot in our area. I just hope I have a job to go back too!!!

I was out today, and gas was $3.62 this afternoon. 5 minutes ago, it was $4.49, and people were lined up into the street to buy it. Part of the price jump is panic buying by consumers.
I am going to wait until I need to buy gas before I worry about it, by then the price may have dropped back again--or gone even higher. You place your bets, and you take your chances.

Going Down?

As of this morning futures are tumbling big time, when will we see relief at the pumps? Probably never. Trading under $100 and was as low as $94 (USD) earlier in London this morning.

Apparently the major midwest pipeline which supplies about 700,000 gallons daily was shut down due to the storm. We went up as high as $3.79 for unleaded. QT which has 79 stations in the metro area is one of the prime users of this pipeline. Over the weekend they suspended gas sales to 17 of their stations due to lack of supply. We've not seen any other retailer having to curtail sales other than QT.

I heard it might take as long as 9 days to restart the pipeline.

What really burns me up about this is that when the price/barrel was down before at less than $95/barrel, we weren't seeing the price/gallon as high as it is now.
Legal extortion.

Too bad other states' AG's don't follow the lead like Arkanthaw's did... I mean, Arkansas... (sorry Gene... ).

It's not looking like we'll make it this year, Steve. Would dearly love to get away for more than a weeked but can't take the time, we're pretty booked. This is a great time of year for a rally, too!

Make sure & get some good photos this year! Oh, and so as not to hijack, diesel here's still $4.09/gal. at my regular station... am waiting for it to rise as gas did because of Ike... it's been 4.09 for the last couple months or so - seems to have stabilized at that.

The news this morning reported over 1,000 emails and phones calls reporting price gouging here. Folks are taking pictures with their phones and sending them to the Attorney General's office. And they are investigating EVERYONE of them!

Prices on regular are only up about 20 cents a gallon here in our part of Florida. Diesel has not gone up at all with prices between $4.05 to $4.35. Prices going up at all, are pure BS, look at the wholesale prices here: Great Pacific Trading Company Commodity Charts and Quotes

I want to buy a gas station, as reported this morning:

Light, sweet crude for October delivery tumbled $3.02 to $92.69 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange by noon in Europe. It briefly fell as low as $91.54. Overnight, the contract dropped $5.47 to settle at $95.71, the first time oil closed below $100 since March 4.

We sure won't see any change at the pump. The local Shell station was at $4.09 for regular. Another new change at the pumps is a different price for cash or credit card. The credit card price is $0.10 per gallon more! Sorry, but I don't walk around with $105.00 cash in pocket all the time.
