I guess we should feel better than our neighbors across the big pond- I think in Paris, gas is around $5.00 a gallon!

it is ridiculous. I have a diesel and have a hard time paying what I am paying these days for it. Hopefully the prices will come down some soon. It would cost over $100 to fill my rig at $5 per gallon!

pertains to fuel prices. Yesterday, Ontario canada reported $1.00/liter.
2 weeks ago I think it was Bruno of france said gas in France was the equivalent to $4.34/gal U.S. for unleaded. $3.41/gal for diesel, and $1.50/gal propane.

Stephanie, I dont think you need to make two trips to fill-up, just hang up the hose, get your receipt, insert your credit card again and continue filling. I have been successful leaving nozzle in tank and flipping the lever if that is the style of pump. Luck

Anyone travelling south on I75 in Florida, I just filled up with diesel at Exit 414 for $1.78 a gallon. Most regular gas is $2.05+ at I75 freeway stations. Seen a few gougers at $2.15.

Diesel is cheaper both north and south of Gainesville exits. Lake City seems to be high too. Ocala area is less expensive.

I just looked back when this thread started, ah!!! the good ol days, reg in the 1.70 range. When I started driving you could get reg leaded for about .45 a gallon. I don't think our children will ever see it under a dollar.

5/19/04 Santa Fe, NM Chevron $2.03 Regular Unleaded

We are known to be 10% to 15% higher than Albuquerque (55 miles down the road - go figure!). You can buy on the reservations around here for much less (especially on Tuesdays and Fridays). Casinos and, dare I say, Indian reservation travel stops are all over. Being sovereign nations, I understand they don't charge or pay taxes on their fuel (or tobacco, for that matter).

Sounds like a pirate's life for me!

I haven't bought cigarette's at our local Native American casino (San Carlos Apache) for over a year, the last time I did they charged me tax, so what's the point, either I pay the State of AZ or the San Carlos Apaches. They do have a rather nice golf course though, much better than our local public nine holer.

Compare the cost of gas to some standard, like the cost of a Hersey bar. No longer 5 cents. Or the price of mc d burger, no longer 6 for a dollar. or the price of fancy water. People pay 2.50 for a pint of fancy pants water and bitch that gas is 2 dollars. Gas is still cheaper than it was 30 years ago. Could change, but so far it's a deal. Drive slower, drive less.

I agree - I think we are spoiled with how cheap gas has been. I understand that gas is $5.00 in Alaska - that would get my attention.

The price of beer has doubled since 1984 in real dollars while the price of gas has increased 35 %. By todays dollar value and gas price a gallon should have cost 17 cents in 1965 to be the same cost as 2 dollar gas. Since this is when I started to buy gas i clearly remember it was around 25cents. In todays prices that would be nearly 3 dollars. Do I like it, no. But we are all out there buying 6 liter or bigger rigs to go to work and back when one of those hybrids would work fine for most of us. The bastards want to drill in Alaska and while I agree with most of there position I'm not with that one. I would gladly pay $4 for gas to not have that happen. Just drive slower and drive less. It's those damn fancy water drinking soccer moms dragging their kids all over the county that are at the route of this problem.

I think the high oil prices are good. people will become more conservative- as has happened in europe. I cannot understand why people wouldnt be willing to conserve if it meant not being dependant on the mid east oil. I like the idea of the arab countries tending their camels and sand (I am being factious). But the whole idea of not being under some other countries' thumb seems to me to be the true feeling of freedom. Mayby I'm being too insular- then again maybe I don't like the dational debt.
The other thing is towns for the most part (kudos for Seattle and Austin) Are not bycycle friendly. My son has had several vehicles swerve towards him deliberately on his 4 mile back road trek to school. So much so that he stopped doing it despite wanting the exercise and freedom from the bus. There aren't enough safe walkways. Even when I rode my horse it was scary business crossing the road. And don't blame water swizzling soccer parents- we often, almost always, car pool to events. Our town simply isnt set up for pedestrians, equinists, or bycyclists. And we have a railroad right through town. There used to be a trolly from Denton to Fort Worth and back. But it was gutted just like the oil/car companies did to L.A.'s great trolly system. The best thing about Europe was the great rail system. And it's accessibility to small towns as well. just my opinion. Remember it was a petrol product that destroyed my immune system- so I'm biased. silver suz

Glad you said it - I was holding back - you are absolutely right, we can't have it both ways - low gas prices and not drilling in places that are better left alone. I will admit readly to be a conservative type - however - I think conservative is also conservation - I've always been taught to be conservative with our resources. I ride or walk everywhere - I only use my 8.1 liter motor when I travel - and most of that is with the trailer! I probably spend less than most even with my monster motor.

And yes, we need more bike friendly cities - good for fuel and great for humanoids.

At these prices, Austin is going to have to get a whole lot more bicycle friendly...

...and light rail friendly, too!

I don't know if you've ridden the DART light rail, Suz, but I have ridden it a couple of times from Park down to the zoo - sure was nice not having to fight all the cars and lights!

Prices being what they are (I personally think we've seen the last of 1.25 or less gasoline in our lifetimes) I guarantee you I'd be riding it if they ever get done fannying about and build the silly thing!

I think they are conditioning our minds this summer. They will get it to $3.00 a gallon, then lower it back down to $2. Then we will think we are getting a deal.

Don't be too quick to compare the US with Europe. Their distances are not as far. You can drive from London to Spain. Its a long, hard day but our friends in London have a spanish summer house, and they share the driving. Its about 14 1/2 hours. That's about 1 hour less then driving from Denver to Tempe doing 75-80 in the duramax.
Our cheap gas stations jumped a nickel today. Reg unl= $1.95, the others go up by 10 cents. Colorado now is averaging over $2/gallon

Just to help with updates, Regular Unleaded in southern Calif (Santa Barbara to Orange County) around $2.30 a gallon these days, and Diesel is $2.50+. Not a good time to be driving the big truck without Probable Cause...
