From South Florida to Alaska and back

Early next week we will be leaving home in South Florida to head toward Dawson Creek, BC to join the WBCCI caravan to Alaska starting July 12th and ending in Prince George ,BC in mid September. We may then head down the West Coast to visit friends in San Francisco before turning back East and home. We have set up a blog at Our Airstream Travels - Blog for friends, family and anybody else who may be interested in our progress.
We have not made any really firm decisions on the route we will take from South West Florida to Dawson Creek except for reservations we have made in the Banff and Jasper area. The most direct route would take us up towards Minneapolis and across the Canadian plains but we are more inclined to head further West via St Louis and hit I90 somewhere in South Dakota and then head up to the border in Montana. Any suggestions from anyone who may have made this trip welcomed.

That's quite a haul! Can't help with the route up but look forward to hearing about it when we all gather in Dawson Creek.

Hi Martin,
Your inclination is a good one given that the 49th parallel seems to have no impact on the geography but a big time impact on the cost of fuel. More distance in the US will slow the drain of the contents of your wallet. You may also get to see Williston, ND, which is a modern version of 1898 Dawson. But don't let it ruin your trip. Jim

Thanks for highlighting a point that I had not really thought about (US/Canada fuel cost differential).

I've driven NY to AK twice, forty years part. That drive is famous for cracking your windshield- much more so back when it was all gravel.

The only ding I got in my windshield was going to a lovely campground outside of Williston, caused by the crazy speeding trucks on a gravel road.

US 2 is a good road and gets you off the interstate so you can see things.

Enjoy the trip!

Head out to Missoula and up route 93 and up the Frazer Valley in Canada.
On the way home consider Prince Rupert and the ferry to Port Hardy Vancouver Island. If you do this make your ferry reservations early. Tafino and Picific Rim National park are great. Victoria is a great city and supper museum of native culture. Take the ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles and the Olympic National Park and then start down the coast

Have you considered a visit to Glacier NP? Well worth it. Also Waterton Lakes, while you're at it.

Yes, we have thought about Glacier NP and Waterton. I think time will preclude visiting on the way North but possibly on the return.

Thanks for these suggestions and having looked at the map will most likely head out West to Missoula and then North to 93.

Sound like one heck of a trip!

If it was me (and its not) I might not go so far west before heading north. It sounds like you will come down the central parts of BC on your way home. So one might be better to stay east of the mountains until you connect with your reservations in Banff on your way north. Going 93 will take you very far west and lots of mountain driving - the same mountain driving you will do heading south.

You can turn north at Greatfalls and cross into southern Alberta if you want to stay in the states as long as you can. Or you can cross in southern Manitoba and cross the Canadian prairies as another option.
If you end up going the Canadian route - schedule to stop in Yorkton SK as we have lots of space for courtesy parking and can show you around a bit.

Cheers
Doug

What you say makes sense (taking 93 on the return) . Appreciate the parking offer in Yorkton and will give you notice if it looks like we will pass your way.

It sounds like you will have a wonderful time. We are in Palmer now, the roads are mostly good considering they only have a few months each year to repair them. There is a really bad stretch for 13 miles when crossing the Alaska Border heading to Chicken. But, it can only get better. Have a great time we might cross paths.
