Frederik Meijer Gardens & Dale Chihuli Art

On our summer trip, we visited Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids, MI. This was a highlight of our trip.

The gardens are featuring an outdoor exhibition of glass art by Dale Chihuli. Even without the Chihuli art, the gardens are a pure delight. Take the tram ride, then hike to the sites that catch your interest.

Most Dale Chihuli art is indoor in places like the San Antonio art museum, but at Meijer Gardens, there are hundreds of his glass items out on the grounds. Some are forests of glass spires while others are fifteen-foot high columns of vari-colored glass. There is a lake with floating glass objects and a rowboat full of glass art.

We spent six hours in the garden and did not see everything. If you are anywhere near Grand Rapids this summer, this is a must-see.

Chihuly Exhibit

Pahaska, thanks so much for posting the Chihuly information and pics. We saw his work a few years ago at the Missouri Botanical Gardens in St. Louis. His works are indeed spectacular.

The Oklahoma City Museum of Art in downtown Oklahoma City has quite a large collection of Chihuly glass as part of its permanent collection.

We may have to add a trip to Michigan to our list this year before the exhibit leaves Meijer Gardens.

if you are in the neighborhood of nashville please take time to see it.

We too saw this Chihuly display in the Phoenix Botanical Gardens last was AWESOME! I wouldn't miss the opportunity to see it again in a different venue ~

For those not familiar with Dale or his work - it really is remarkable! Check out:

One of my favorites is below - I love the play of the natural plants with the glass.

Visiting the Meijer Gardens sculpture park with or without the Chihuly art is a wonderful experience. We rode the tram through the park last April and were so taken with the art that we returned the second day to walk the exhibits - wonderful!

A couple of years ago, the Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus exhibited Chihuly throughout the floral arrangements in the conservatory. It was such a hit, they purchased the entire exhibit to make it permanent. It continues to be such a hit, the another installation was made this summer to accompany the original and the crowds have started all over. If you are in the Columbus, OH area, it is well worth a visit.

While in the area, be sure to check out the HAWK Gallery which specializes in Chihuly's work. They are currently showing today's greatest glass artist, Nino Tialiepietra (a poor attempt at spelling). OUTSTANDING!!!
