I hear blackflies are really bad in Michigan in July, so be prepared.

If you have your passports in order slipping over the border to see a small-town Canada Day celebration on July 1st might be culturally stimulating; either with or without your trailer in tow...

??? I am curoius too. What's up in Michigan on the 4th? It's our 40th wedding anniversary and as far as I know, we have no plans.
I think all the parks have a number of some open walk-in sites and there are always cancellations. We have camped on short notice on Father's Day and the 4th in Wisconsin and would imagine Michigan to be similar. Walk-ins are best claimed by Wednesday or Thursday before the holiday.
Where have all our Michiganders gone? Chime in buddies. Looks like there may be the makings of a PAR-TAY!

Sounds fun and we have toured Lake Michigan and Wisconsin and the state of Michigan many times. We certainly have some favorite haunts to share. Hmmmm.
You might tap into a Metro Detroit thread and flush out the cronies. I don't think they are all holed up for the 4th yet! Now just where are those pesky rascals anyway?
You have to go to the Porkies in the UP. The longer you can stay there the better. There is plenty to do and see.

Right at the bridge between upper and lower Michigan is Wilderness State Park, also very very nice but smaller and a half hour from jumping on a scooner to go to Mackinaw Island. You can catch it on the way North or the way back down South.

In between those two is Taquamenon Falls State park with several waterfalls and close to the museum where the Fritzgerald went down and Whitefish Point.

Those are our most favorite parks. But there are many more in Michigan.
On the West side of Michigan there is Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and Ludington State Park.

We travelled to Michigan every year when I was younger, and then I took my family back last year. We went to Charles Mears State Park in Pentwater, MI. VERY small town, but the campground is pretty much on the beach. They have some great sand dunes including Mount Baldy that give's an amazing view. Collin loved the beach which took us all of 4 minutes to walk to.
View from Mt. Baldy.

Dang I timed out...
At the top of the UP there is Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Isle Royale National Park.
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (U.S. National Park Service)
Isle Royale National Park (U.S. National Park Service)
There are 97 State Parks in Michigan and more National and recreational areas. Just ask anywhere and they will send you off to a great location.
The Detroit area has some super things to do like the Ford Museum with many exciting and interesting exhibits including an aluminum round house of the future (1940s) Tom Thumb's horse carriage and Oscar Mayer's Weiner Mobile, and real diner, Mac Donalds, first campers and trailers amd vans, the president's vehicles and so very much , planes Wright Bros, Amelia Erhardt's, the Civil Rights bus that Rosa Parks rode.

There is Frankenmuth a great tourist place with Bavarian flavor, dressed in costume playing acordians as you dine, horse drawn buggies, boutiques, a clock tower with bells and animated characters and the longest covered bridge and a paddleboat down the river.

campground review
I think Tin Sista and family have done a whole bunch of campground reviews on this airforum site and there were a bunch in MI. Go over to the MetroDetroit thread and post a query there.
Carol, I think alot of our MI folks are headed to the Tin Can this weekend, aren't they?

Oh Lou, that's where everybody is at Camp Dearborn and the TCT rally! No wonder it's quiet. I look forward to their pictures. I could drive up tomorrow for Open House.
Speaking of pictures, I missed those. Steve, those Michigan pictures are super! And I love Collin's pose. We will have to check out your suggestions. Are you headed back for the MD rally in August?

Hey Carol,
No MD for me for the foreseeable future. I am in nursing school full time, and can only get away for close rally events. When are you folks going to visit us down here?!?!

Those are breathtakingly beautiful, Carol! We have been to the UP several times, but never in the Fall.

If you can't get a reservation at any place you want to be in Michigan over the Fourth, I'll let you in on one of the Michiganders' best kept secrets (if you promise not to tell anyone else): Canada!
Because of crazy crowds in Michigan's terrific State Parks and other campgrounds over holiday weekends, we sometimes go over to Ontario to, e.g. The Pinery and other of the Ontario Provincial Parks. Because their holidays generally don't align with ours, there are almost always good sites available at these nice parks. And there are several of them, right on Lake Huron.
The only downside that I can think of is that sometimes the lines ar elong to get back across the border at the Blue Water Bridge. But I think it's worth it.
Keep it quiet, ok?

Thank you Maggie. Fall is our favorite season to camp. Though I would love to have shorter winters I would miss the change from late summer to fall in the Northern woods. The snow even looks good... at first.
