Union has electric and we stay right on the Lake row in Union here. It's very special.

Taquamenon Falls, River Bend Campground (rustic) View from the campsites along the river. You can hear a bubble break when it's calm. A great stop on the way to the Porkies. There is also a modern campground with electric just down along the river within walking distance.

Those are breathtakingly beautiful, Carol! We have been to the UP several times, but never in the Fall.

If you can't get a reservation at any place you want to be in Michigan over the Fourth, I'll let you in on one of the Michiganders' best kept secrets (if you promise not to tell anyone else): Canada!

Because of crazy crowds in Michigan's terrific State Parks and other campgrounds over holiday weekends, we sometimes go over to Ontario to, e.g. The Pinery and other of the Ontario Provincial Parks. Because their holidays generally don't align with ours, there are almost always good sites available at these nice parks. And there are several of them, right on Lake Huron.

The only downside that I can think of is that sometimes the lines ar elong to get back across the border at the Blue Water Bridge. But I think it's worth it.

Keep it quiet, ok?

Thank you Maggie. Fall is our favorite season to camp. Though I would love to have shorter winters I would miss the change from late summer to fall in the Northern woods. The snow even looks good...at first.

West Michigan

I would love to see more Airstreams in West Michigan. Our favorite park is Holland State Park - but no doubt that is booked already. There is a very nice park called Oak Grove campground near Holland State park - that may have an opening or two. We are currently Parked just south of Grand Rapids at "Woodchip" Campground in Byron Center. There are many openings here, and I know there are some available for the Fouth of July. There are some full hook up's and pull through's and even some seasonals.

This way you are 20 minutes from Grand Rapids - 25 Minutes from Holland and Lake Michigan.

Oh and by the way - It is the Upper penninsula that has the black flies - not a problem in West Mi

The furthest away and the best 4th of July party in Michigan is always in Copper Harbor. Copper Harbor is the northern most point in the UP and it is a bash in that town on the 4th, but get there a day early.

Hey kingfisher,

Happy 4th and hope you found something fun to do and a good place to hunker down for the holiday weekend.

"(WXYZ) - When the 4th of July holiday rolls around, many people head out of town to enjoy some time off with family and friends.
Whether they're headed to a vacation destination, or up north, or even to one of the campgrounds that dot our area, they're looking for some fun in the sun. This year is no different, with thousands of people looking to hit the airways, lakes, rivers and roads.
Some travel forecasts have more people heading out of town this year than last. For many people that means hitting the roads. According to AAA, they're going to find higher gas prices across the northern states and into the southwestern parts of the country. Gas prices will be lower in the southeast.
In our state, prices will range from $2.74 to $3.04 a gallon, with the higher prices coming in the northern part of Michigan. Prices will be slightly lower if you head down south to Ohio and Indiana.
If you want to get away, but you don't want the hassle of hitting the roads, you can find plenty to do at our areas camp grounds and state parks. Places like Camp Dearborn are open for business."
