Found Nice campground in AZ

By chance spent the night at this AZ State Park off I40 close to Winslow. Was impressed. Only 1.5 miles off freeway but was quiet, clean, and great facilities. There's a nice museum at the visitor center and old ruins with easy access to tour all within walking distance. Was an unexpected treat so thought I'd share.

Oh, yes, Homolovi is really great! We've been staying there every time we pass through for years!

The map indicates that the ruins are located just outside the Navajo Reservation, but, as you can kind of tell by its name, Homolovi is an ancestral site of some of the Hopi. But that's not unususal. Many of the ancestral sites though the southwest are now located on lands that are nowadays on or closest to other tribes' lands.

NICE! Thanks. I always need a rest stop in that area.

We camped in an Arizona state park in 1999. I don't remember the name of it or the exact location. I think it may have been Picacho off of I-10 as that is the route we were travelling. The setting was beautiful. There were very large rabbits (hares? jack rabbits?) and road runner birds (meep meep!). There was a natural hot spring fed hot tub. I wouldn't mind re-visiting that location again some day.

AZ State Parks are wonderful! We have camped in almost every one where there is camping available ... EXCEPT Homolovi! Thanks for the review... Because of our location in Tucson, we rarely travel that stretch between Flagstaff and Winslow, so one of these days we'll have to just have to make plans to go that way so we can see it for ourselves! Seems only the right thing to do...

We stop at Homolovi every spring on our way to baseball. Be sure to seek out Gwen Setalla when she is firing her pottery on site. Beautiful art and everything done the traditional way from mining the clay to firing.

Stayed at Homolovi for the first time this February. Had the place to ourselves -- the water wasn't on yet, but we enjoyed it!

Arizona's Catalina State Park north of Tucson in Oro Valley is awesome as well! A view of the Catalina Mountains from our site was wonderful.

I visited Homolovi last year, during trip whose itinerary was hastily adjusted by the Sedona fire. Unfortunately, I hadn't known about Homolovi until the day I reached Winslow, or I might have stayed in that campground, instead of a hotel. Very nice park - we spent the entire afternoon there, hiking, after visiting Meteor Crater earlier that morning. That was originally supposed to be our afternoon and first night in Sedona, but Winslow turned out to be a neat place. After visiting Homolovi, we checked into our hotel and showered, then visited the historic downtown. The famous corner from the song was there, and there was a near little linear park along the railroad. We had a great dinner at the historic restaurant in the historic La Posada Hotel, which was designed to resemble one of those rambling old adobe haciendas. Homolovi and Winslow aren't a bad way to kill a day or two if you want to.
