Florida Parks

We've been wintering in Florida for 14 years. Yes, it is VERY difficult to reserve a site in a state park, especially the Keys where we used to go. And the private CGs became very expensive.

A couple of thoughts:

1. John Prince Park in Lake Worth, a Palm Beach County park, is very nice but occasionally has some vacancies. Especially the lake front sites which are limited to 2 weeks.

2. We now go to Chokoloskee over in the SW corner of the state. It is an Indian shell island, about a mile by a mile and a half, and surrounded by the Everglades NP. The park is Chokoloskee Island Park and Marina. Sites are small and tight but everyone is friendly and some folks have been wintering there for 30 years. A short kayak paddle to the 10,000 Islands and good fishing (redfish, trout, snook). About 40 miles to the Publix grocery store. We go for 3 months so I'm not sure of the daily rate, but there are usually a few available sites if you don't show up on Friday or Saturday or a holiday weekend. It's best to be interested in fishing as there is little else to do.

Reserveamerica is great for snowbirds to schedule a winter stay, 11 months ahead but a real pain for local residents that haven't learned to schedule far in advance. The state park rangers have mentioned they are still trying to get the right mix of reservations and keeping the office open to accommodate those driving up. We use the system by checking for sites early then watching to see when they have spaces available, Sun to Thursday as a general rule will get a site if not in the most popular parks, some on the water get filled the day the sites open up a year in advance. Don't travel on a Friday and expect to find an open site for the weekend, most parks have lots of checkouts Sundays. By the way nobody has mentioned how cg's have lobbied so that it is illegal to park outside of a cg in a lot of south Florida counties.

Are you signed up for the Canopener rally? Does Topsail still have spots available?

Well, I must say it is getting a little crowded here in the Winter months. As much as we try to keep paradise a secret, it keeps getting out. BTW most campgrounds gov't or private have a few extras out there. Call direct! The problem is if you are unfortunate to be too late they are taken. Good luck with you search!

Check out Geiger Key and Rv Resort. Casual and small park. Fun atmosphere 12 miles north of Key West. Not well known so may have some room. Only 31 sites. Has a nice restaurant/bar with live music. Not as cheap as a state park though.

Currently only thing available between Stuart and Hobe Sound is Floridays. In really bad shape, but cheap -$29 per night with a discount for over 5 days. Not pretty but conveniently located and quiet.

Just curious did you travel to the Keys this winter? My wife and I just returned home from a seven week trip to FL. We made reservations 11 months in advance and stayed 4 weeks in state parks in the Keys. During our stay we encountered several couples that managed to pick-up a number of days stay due to cancellations or by being at the park office at 8:00 a.m.

No, we didn't.

AND, I'm currently looking at availabilities a year off (particularly those below Tampa), and a lot of stuff is already gone.

Hmmmmmm, I wonder if anyone's into selling RV campground futures?

Well the four state parks in the keys are generally sold out 11 months and 1 second to the day. St Lucie South seems to follow that pattern as well. Jonathan Dickinson SP in Hobe Sound sometimes has vacancies when none exist elsewhere.

Salt Springs In Ocala National Forest, Full Hook Ups, they keep a large portion of the park as first come first serve, and we've been 4 times now and always found a spot. It's quite and clean. Good 4G LTE with booster.

Fort Desoto located near St Petersburg is a nice county park on the bay. County residents can begin booking 7 months in advance all others 6 months in advance.

The Land Yacht Harbor in Melbourne, FL sent me a voucher for a free night when I bought my trailer.
